A native of Summit, N.J., Maguire Sweeney joined the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s basketball staff ahead of the 2023-24 season.
During Sweeney’s three seasons with the program, the Engineers have compiled a 58-23 overall record while earning back-to-back Liberty League regular-season championships.
In 2025-26, RPI finished 21-6 overall and 16-2 in Liberty League play, capturing the conference regular-season championship for the second consecutive season. Andrew Deppe and PJ Scalisi earned All-Liberty League honors, while Sweeney was part of the staff recognized as the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
The previous season, Rensselaer posted a 21-6 overall record and a 14-4 mark in Liberty League play. The Engineers won the Liberty League regular-season championship and finished No. 1 in the NCAA Region III rankings. RPI also led all NCAA Division III programs in scoring defense, allowing just 57.3 points per game. Avery Eugster, Dylan Matchett, and Andrew Deppe each earned All-Liberty League honors.
In Sweeney’s first season with the Engineers in 2023-24, RPI finished 16-11 overall and placed third in the Liberty League. Jonny Angbazo and Avery Eugster earned All-Liberty League honors, with Angbazo also being named the Liberty League Player of the Year. The Engineers ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense, allowing 58.4 points per game.
Sweeney’s responsibilities at Rensselaer include coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts and serving as the team’s scouting director. He is also heavily involved in on-court player development, program operations, and fundraising.
Prior to arriving in Troy, Sweeney spent one season as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Newark, where he served as the program’s recruiting coordinator, scouting director, and academic coordinator. During his time with the Scarlet Raiders, Sweeney helped coach two student-athletes who earned All-Conference honors, including one who was named Defensive Player of the Year.
Before beginning his coaching career, Sweeney was a member of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s basketball program from 2017-22. During his playing career, he was part of two conference championship teams in 2020 and 2022 and served as captain of the 2022 championship team.
Sweeney earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Stevens in 2021 and an MBA in project management in 2022.
