TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Justin Metzger earned National All-American honors after finishing eighth in the men's pole vault with a height of 4.77 meters at the 2010 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by DePauw University at Hollensteiner Track in Greencastle, Ind.
This is the second straight All-American recognition for Metzger, who was sixth at last year's National Championships.
Metzger, who was the only representative from the Liberty League in the 12-participant pole vault field, capped a fantastic indoor season with his finish at the National Meet. In eight indoor competitions, he finished eighth or better, including top-five in seven of those.
The Shenendehowa High School graduate had qualified for Nationals after posting a school record mark of 4.93 meters at the 2010 Liberty League Championships on February 13.
Metzger, who achieved an NCAA Provisional mark five times in 2010, picked up wins at the NYC Gotham Cup, the Class of '32 Invitational at Colgate, the Dartmouth Indoor Classic and the Liberty League Championships, this season. He also earned the league's Field Performer of the Week four times.
Jake Winder, a senior from North Central College, won the event with a height of 5.12 meters. It was his second consecutive NCAA title, having won the 2009 event with a height of 5.22 meters.
Today's competition concludes the indoor season for both the men's track & field teams. The outdoor season begins on March 27th as the Engineers men's and women's squads host the RPI Early Outdoor Invitational at Harkness Track & Field.
