2010 Season Outlook
TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer head football coach Joe King has announced the captains for the 2010 season. All seniors, they are defensive lineman
Darryl Brown, running back
Nick Costa, offensive lineman
Eric Dinarello, linebacker
Colin King and wide receiver
Pat McCarthy. All five student-athletes are first-year captains.
Brown, who hails from Hollis, N.Y., finished with 37 tackles in 2009, including 22 unassisted, 7.5 for lost yards (42) and 6.0 sacks (36 yards lost). He also broke up two passes, recovered two fumbles, forced a fumble and blocked a kick. Among Liberty League players, the Bayside High School graduate was fourth in sacks per game (0.67).
A native of Yonkers, N.Y., Costa led the Engineers with 608 rushing yards on 145 carries for a 4.2 yards-per-carry average in last year. Scoring four touchdowns, he also recorded six receptions for 57 yards. Through three seasons in the Rensselaer backfield, the Iona Prep graduate has rushed for 1,619 yards on 410 carries and notched 22 career touchdowns, including 11 in 2008.
Dinarello, who is from Topsfield, Mass., started all nine games for the Engineers last season. He helped anchor an offensive line that cleared the way for 1,395 yards rushing and 1,461 yards through the air. A graduate of Masconomet Regional High School, he and his linemates surrendered just 17 sacks in 2009.
A native of Glenmont, N.Y., King was third on the team with 65 tackles in 2009, including 33 solo stops. Fourth on the club with four tackles for lost yardage (21), the former Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk standout also had a sack and two pass breakups.
McCarthy, who hails from Strafford, N.H., led the Engineers with 39 catches for 352 yards, despite missing time due to injury last season. Second in the Liberty League in receptions per game (4.88), the Spaulding High School graduate was third in receiving yards per contest (66.5), sixth in all-purpose yards (800) and kick-return average (17.5).
The Engineers open their 2010 campaign on September 11, when they visit Endicott (1pm). Rensselaer's first home contest is scheduled for September 25, when it takes on WPI in the Transit Trophy Game (2pm).
