ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's cross country teams were in action at the NYSCTC Championships, hosted by Nazareth College, and both teams had solid efforts on the course. The Engineers women ran to third overall among 12 competing teams, while the men were fourth of 12 teams.
In the women's 6k, RPI was led by senior Grace Tilton (Concord, NH / Concord), who placed eighth overall with a time of 23:25.69. Close behind was senior Meredith Mayes (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough), who was 15th with a time of 23:43.97. Freshman Emily Stickles (Franklin, MA / Franklin) also finished in the top 20 with a time of 24:02.37.
Rochester's Lauren Norton won the event, finishing the race in a time of 22:18.02. St. Lawrence won the team title, posting 23 points in the win. Ithaca was second with 88 points, while Rensselaer (92) edged Rochester (93) for third. Hamilton (109) rounded out the top five.
Leading the way on the men's side was senior
Patrick Cavanaugh (Cheshire, CT / Cheshire), who was ninth overall with an 8k time of 26:19.75. Classmate
Ben Levitz (Bronxville, NY / Bronxville) was second on the team and 14th overall with a time of 26:26.88 and junior
Sean Quinn (Brookline, NH / Hollis Brookline) was 19th (26:33.50).
The overall winner for the men's competition was St. Lawrence's Sam Rakoc with a time of 25:44.46. He won this year's title with a time of 25:46. Rochester won the team trophy with 48 points, just four ahead of St. Lawrence (52). Ithaca (82) was six points in front of fourth place Rensselaer (88) and Hamilton finished fifth (145).
The Engineers squads return to action next weekend when they compete in the Liberty League Championships, hosted by Clarkson University on Saturday.
