TROY, N.Y. – Katie Daniels and Taylor Horton have been named the captains of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's ice hockey team, 10th-year head coach John Burke has announced. Daniels is a senior who plays defense and Horton is a senior forward.

A native of Rockton, Ill., Daniels has played 99 career games on the blueline, scoring two goals with 17 assists for 19 points. She also has 91 penalty minutes. She had three assists in 30 games as a freshman, eight assists in 37 games as a sophomore and two goals and six assists in 2010-11. She did not play last season due to an injury.

A mechanical engineering major, she is a multiple ECAC Hockey All-Academic honoree. Prior to Rensselaer, Daniels played for the Chicago Mission while attending Hononegah High School.

Horton has 57 points on 28 goals and 29 assists in 106 career contests. Eight of her goals came on the power play and six have been game-winners. The St. Thomas, Ont., native has 86 career PIMs.

As an assistant captain last season, Horton played in all 34 games, scoring nine times with eight assists for 17 points. That followed a sophomore season in which she had a career-high 23 points, including 12 goals, in 35 games. She led the Engineers in points, goals, game-winning goals (4) and power play goals (4) and was second in assists. As a freshman, the former Bluewater Hawks standout had 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists) while playing all 37 games. She was named to the ECAC Hockey Weekly Honor Roll twice that year.

Horton, a graduate of St. Joseph's Catholic High School, is an interdisciplinary science dual in psychology major.

The Engineers, who return 18 letterwinners, begin the season on October 5-6 when they host the University of Connecticut at the Houston Field House. Game times are 7pm and 3pm for those games.
