CANTON, N.Y. - On the second of the two-day New York State Championship Meet, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's indoor track & field team posted numerous impressive performances, including three individual victories and a win in the 4x400 relay.

Despite the success, the Engineers fell two points shy of winning the championship. The host, St. Lawrence University (SLU), edged RPI by two points. The meet came down to the final relay as SLU sophomore Harrison Sloan's lunging dive at the finish line gave St. Lawrence second behind RPI and enough points to hold off the Engineers for the team title. SLU finished with 150 points with RPI second with 148, Rochester third with 92.5 and Ithaca fourth with 87.5.

Among those who finished first was junior Devan Hayes, who won the weight throw with a toss of 16.46 meters. He was not the only Engineers thrower to enjoy success in that event as three of his teammates also placed in the top seven. Senior Zac Borrelli was third (15.99), sophomore Tyler Yeastedt was fourth (15.92) and senior David McWilliams finished seventh (14.64).

Stephen Silber, a senior, won the high jump with a height of 6-06.00, while sophomore Bobby Parker was the first across the line in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:39.49. The 4x400 relay team also earned 10 points for RPI when Kevin Dupont, Alex Delaney, Dylan Landry and Ben Mason combined for a time of 3:26.83.

Landry had an individual runner-up, finishing second in the 400 dash (50.93), while Mason was fifth in the 500 (67.44). He was followed closely by Delaney, who was fifth in that event (67.61).

Among the Engineers who were third was Sam Elllis in the 60-meter hurdles (8.72), Tyler Gumina in the 1000 meters (2:32.08) and the 4x800 relay team of Zach Vanderzee, Colin Smith, Garrett Davis and Gumina (8:03.79).

A select number of team members will compete next week at Tufts University as well as at the ECAC Championship.
