Tournament PageTROY, N.Y. – Rochester advanced to the Liberty League's second consolation round game after posting a 13-2 softball victory over Skidmore College in a game halted by the mercy rule.
The Yellowjackets will play Union College at 3 p.m. on Friday at RPI's Doris Robison Field. Union lost to host RPI in Friday's first game, 6-5, when RPI scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Rochester sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first against Skidmore and scored nine runs, six of those coming on home runs. The Yellowjackets hit four home runs on the afternoon – one apiece by Tayler Fravel, Eleni Wechsler, Meg Hennessy, and Nina Korn.
Brittany Grage picked up her 12th win of the season. She allowed four hits and just five runners to reach base – four on hits and one on a fielding error. The win increased Rochester's record to 23-11.
The loss went to Skidmore's Cassie Fishkin. She allowed the nine first-inning runs, five of which were unearned. Lauren Fortunato pitched the final three innings. She allowed four runs on five hits.
Fravel homered in the bottom of the first. After walks to Hennessy and Korn, Wechsler homered to left, building the lead to 4-0. Lauren Muni bounced out. Grage reached on an error. Alyssa Murillo dropped a single into left center and Shelby Corning bunted for a base hit. Tiffany White's sac fly brought home Grage with an unearned run (5-0). Fravel, batting for the second time in the inning, tripled home two more (both unearned, 7-0). Hennessy made it 9-0 with a two-run home run to center.
Skidmore scratched out two runs in the third. Sam Skott singled with two down for Skidmore's first hit. Fortunato singled her to third and took second on the throw. Abby Shea doubled home both runners.
In its half of the third, Rochester scored three times to restore the run differential to 12-2. White singled with one out, but was forced at second by Fravel. Hennessy walked and Korn hit a 3-0 pitch over the centerfield fence for her 10th home run of the year. In the Rochester fourth, Muni doubled and Grage doubled her home.
On Thursday, Union rallied for a 6-4 victory by scoring six runs in the last two innings. The mid-afternoon game on Friday will be the fourth meeting of the season between the Dutchwomen and the Yellowjackets.
Friday's winner advances to play RPI on Saturday. The Liberty League champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
