Laura Horwood scored a goal and recorded an assist to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 4-2 win over Union in ECAC women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-17-1 on the season, with a 3-10-1 mark in conference play, while Union drops to 4-18-4 overall, and 1-12-1 in the ECAC.
RPI scored twice in the first period, with Horwood (Belleville, ON / Durham West Lightning) netting the game's first goal at 11:21, taking assists from
Shayna Tomlinson (Gilford, NH / Assabet Valley).
Katie Rooney (Buffalo, MN / Buffalo) put Rensselaer up, 2-0, with her third goal of the season just over five minutes later, getting the rebound off of an initial shot byÂ
Hannah Behounek (Minnetonka, MN / Minnetonka) and finding the back of the net behind Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg (Peterbourough, NH / Deerfield Academy). The Dutchwomen got on the board at the end of the period, getting a tally from Jessica Kaminsky (La Salle, MB / Pembina Valley) at 17:42. Assists on the goal went to Christine Valent (West Haven, CT / Choate Rosemary Hall) and Kathryn Tomaselli (Cranston, RI / WIlliston-Northampton).Â
Lauren Wash (Belle Mead, NJ / New Jersey Rockets) scored the lone goal of the second period to put RPI on top, 3-1. At 6:04, Delaney Middlebrook (Minneapolis, MN / Niagara) passed the puck from the high slot to the Ali Svoboda (Arlington Heights, IL / Chicago Misson) in the far faceoff circle, who shot it in toward the net where Wash was waiting in front of the net.Â
Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicsburg, PA / Washington Pride) added the final goal for the Engineers at 9:08 of the third period. Horwood picked up her second point of the game on the tally, while Tomlinson added her second assist of the day. Union set the final score in the final minute of play, as Rebecca Babiak (Winnipeg, MB / Balmoral Hall) scored at 19:28, with assists going to Emily Erickson (Crosslake, MN / North American Hockey Academy) and Kaminsky.
Rensselaer's Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, WI / Madison Capitals) recorded 25 saves for the Engineers, including 12 in the second period. Lundberg totaled 39 saves for the Dutchwomen, stopping a game-high 16 opposing shots in the second stanza. RPI outshot Union, 43-27, while the Dutchwomen held a 29-26 advantage in faceoff wins.
RPI will return to action next Friday, traveling to Colgate in ECAC action starting at 3 p.m. Union kicks off the weekend trip at Cornell on Friday, also at 3 p.m.Â
