GENEVA, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) recorded four of the top five finishers in capturing its first outright Liberty League men's cross country title Saturday at Seneca Lake State Park.
Senior
Ben Fazio broke away from a pack late in the race to win on the 8,000-meter course in 25:22.5, good for a four-second victory over sophomore teammate
Grant O'Connor (25:26.5). Other RPI scorers included sophomore
Sean O'Connor (fourth; 25:41.6), senior
Garrett Davis (fifth; 25:48.9) and senior
Matthew Cicciu (tenth; 26:09.2).
RPI had seven of the first 12 finishers in capturing the team title with 22 points. St. Lawrence (62) finished second followed by Vassar (69), RIT (89), Clarkson (145), Union (196), Hobart (212) and Bard (260).
RPI and St. Lawrence University were co-champions in 2005 when they tied for the team title. St. Lawrence had won or shared the Liberty League title in all 21 years since the league's inception in 1995 prior to Saturday's second-place finish.
The top 14 finishers earned All-Liberty League honors. The first seven finishers – Fazio,
Grant O'Connor, Thomas Caulfied (St. Lawrence),
Sean O'Connor, Davis, Jonathan Pelzar (RIT) and Michael Scarlett (Vassar) – were recognized as All-Liberty League first-team selections.
Individuals finishing in spots 8-14 were recognized as All-Liberty League second-team selections. Second-team honorees included James Bailey (RIT), Benjamin Fishbein (St. Lawrence), Cicciu,
Brian Crowley (RPI),
Matthew Stewart (RPI), Adin Becker (Vassar) and Sidi Abdoulaye (St. Lawrence).
