Football Hosts Hobart on Saturday

KICKOFF: It is Reunion & Homecoming Weekend at Rensselaer and the Engineers (3-2; 1-1 Liberty League) host Hobart (5-0; 2-0 Liberty League), the 22nd-ranked team in Division III, in a conference matchup.

NATIONALLY-RANKED: This is the third home game for RPI and each opponent appears in this week's D3football.com Top 25 Poll ... Hobart is 22nd, St. Lawrence, who Rensselaer lost to two weeks ago (20-14), is 21st and Alfred, who beat the Engineers in Week 2, 33-17, is ranked 25th ... All three opponents are currently 5-0.

ALL-TIME VS. HOBART: RPI and Hobart have played 59 times and the head-to-head series is tied, 29-29-1 ... The first meeting was October 15, 1910, a 6-5 Statesmen victory in Troy.

RECENTLY: RPI defeated the Statesmen last season, 21-20, snapping a three-game losing streak to Hobart ... The Engineers are 4-6 in their last 10 contests with the Statesmen. 

CLOSE CONTESTS: In the seven games between 2005 and 2011, Hobart outscored RPI by only 20 points (190-170) ... Six contests were decided by one score, including four games by three points or fewer.

LAST 10 IN TROY: In the last 10 meetings between Rensselaer and Hobart in the Capital Region, dating back to 1997, the Engineers are 4-6.

IN TROY ALL-TIME: In 32 all-time meetings in Troy, Rensselaer is 17-15-0 versus Hobart.

IN LEAGUE PLAY: Rensselaer is 9-12 in Liberty League play against the Statesmen ... The Engineers were 10-16-1 in ICAC games with Hobart ... The ICAC was the league in which they both competed from 1964 to 1990.

IN THE RECORD BOOK: RPI's 29 wins against Hobart ranks third most against any one school, trailing only WPI (58) and Rochester (30).

OVERTIME: Rensselaer has played six overtime games in school history and two have been against Hobart, both in Geneva ... The Engineers lost 36-35 in 1996 (Nov. 16) and were defeated 56-48 in 2005 (Sept. 24).

RPI LAST WEEK: RPI scored five touchdowns offensively and one defensively in a 51-13 win at Rochester ... The Engineers, who had 519 total yards, also got three field goals (30, 30, 23 yards) and six extra points from Christian Kapp ... Junior running back Mike Tivinis led RPI with 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns ... He scored on an eight-yard run to start the third quarter (boosting the RPI lead to 27-6), then added an 11-yard TD run with 2:53 left in the third (41-13) ... Sophomore Nick Cella rushed 18 times for a career-high 111 yards and one TD ... RPI's other rushing touchdown came from Johnny Ramsdell, a two-yarder in the first period to open the scoring ... Ethan Wells gained 99 yards on 14 carries ... Quarterback Eddie Trimpert completed five of eight passes for 63 yards and one TD, a 34-yard strike to John Costello on the final play of the first half ... The defensive touchdown was scored by Anthony Gallo, who intercepted a pass in the right flat and returned it 28 yards to complete the scoring with just under five minutes remaining.

RECORD SETTING: RPI registered its highest point total ever against the Yellowjackets in Saturday's 51-13 win ... It was the 75th meeting between Rensselaer and Rochester, dating back to October 13, 1906.

GOLDEN TOTAL: The last time the Engineers scored at least 50 points in a game was 2011, a 51-21 win over Castleton ... RPI's 51 points at Rochester was its most on the road since November 8, 2003, when it scored 55 points (55-0 at St. Lawrence). 

BACKFIELD DEPTH: Eleven student-athletes carried the ball for positive yardage for RPI against Rochester. 

UPPERHAND: RPI has won five of the last seven meetings against the Yellowjackets.

100 X 2: Mike Tivinis (124 yards) and Nick Cella (111) were the first two Engineers to rush for at least 100 yards in the same game since Jay Bernardo (220) and Otis Williams (147) did so against Coast Guard nearly 12 years ago to the day, October 2, 2004.

400: RPI had 456 rushing yards at Rochester on Saturday ... The last time the Engineers ran for at least 400 yards was nearly 20 years prior when Rensselaer totaled 475 against WPI on September 26, 1998.
 
HONORED: Junior running back Mike Tivinis was named to the Liberty League Weekly Honor Roll after leading RPI to a 51-13 win at Rochester with 124 rushing yards on 14 carries, an 8.9 per rush average, and two touchdowns ... He scored on an eight-yard run to start the third quarter and an 11-yard run with 2:53 left in the third.

PICK SIXES: The Engineers have recorded three interceptions returned for touchdowns this season ... Sean Egan did so in the first game (15 yards), Alexander Greenidge had a 34-yard return for a score at MIT in week two and Anthony Gallo went 28 yards against Rochester last week.

BACK AND FORTH: RPI has yet to have a winning streak or a losing streak this season.

UPCOMING: The Engineers visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy next Saturday (1pm) before hosting WPI for the Transit Trophy Game the following Saturday as part of Family Weekend in Troy ... The battle with the Engineers begins at noon.

The Statesmen have a bye after this week's action.
