Prior to the final games of the regular season each year since 2004, the seniors on the football team were asked to reflect on the following question: What has made your time at RPI special? Below are their responses.
COLLIN ADALIAN ’05 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Altamont, N.Y.)
I’ve found in my four years at RPI that I have been involved with a first-tier educational system and a competitive athletic program on the national level. It is not common to find an institution that excels in both areas. Knowing that the school and its administrators are passionate about both, I knew this was the right fit for me.
JOE ALBANO '10 (Civil Engineering; Dalton, Mass.)
Looking back at the four years I've spent at RPI, only two things come to mind as how to best describe my experience: challenging but fun. From the very first day I stepped on the practice field to now, the coaching staff continually challenged each and every one of us to improve not only on the football field, but in life as well. To the professional athletic training staff: I am forever grateful. Your care and expertise has allowed me to play at the highest level each week, as well as make great strides physically that I never thought possible. Football is a microcosm of life. Its trials and tribulations on the field parallel the adversity many of us will experience in the world. The friends you make and the people who help along the way will always be remembered: those bonds will last a lifetime. I am very fortunate to have been a member of this football team. The players, the coaches, and the training staff have made such a profound impact on my life that I consider them an extension of my family.
SAL ALTIERI '12 (Civil Engineering; Staten Island, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been special because I developed not only as an athlete or scholar, but as a person. The close knit community here has taught me many lessons that I may have never been exposed to anywhere else. The time spent with my teammates and coaches was some of the greatest of my life.
MATTHEW AUGEN '09 (Management; Bayside, N.Y.)
RPI Football is a great group of guys who work hard every day for a common team goal. Some of the guys on the team are an extended family to me, which wouldn't have happened without football.
KEVIN AVERY '09 (Management; White Plains, N.Y.)
Over the past four years my experience at Rensselaer has been nothing short of life changing. The relationships I have built and the lessons I have learned, both in the classroom and out on the field, will stay with me my entire life. I have been blessed by being a part of this football program. It is very unique in that it is like having a second family. All of the people involved in this family truly care about you and the person you grow into. I can honestly say that being part of RPI football has helped mold me into the man I am today. The guys that I have played with over the past four years have become like brothers to me, and they will forever be considered as such. Coach King and his staff do their very best to bring out the best in each and every one of us. I am forever in debt of their services. Not only do they expect the utmost out of us on the playing field, but in the classroom and in the community as well. Ort and his staff and the guys in the cage have also been an integral part of our success and I appreciate everything that they do for this program. I am very proud to say that I play RPI Football.
JAY BERNARDO ’07 (Management; East Greenbush, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been special because I’ve been given an opportunity that many people don’t get the chance to have. Coming in as a freshman I didn’t really know what to expect, but as I reflect on my time here, I’m overly grateful to have been involved in something that has allowed me to grow. With that, I’ve taken away memories and friendships from here that will last me a lifetime. And I don’t think I could have obtained that anywhere else. As I take the next step into my life, I look forward to maintaining those friendships as well as using what I’ve learned here for many years to come.
NICK BELL '11 (Mechanical Engineering; Cambridge, N.Y.)
The experience that I will cherish the most about being a member of the RPI football team is the camaraderie I felt with my teammates. There was never a time when it felt like people were just out for themselves; we were in it together every single day. From the hottest days of camp in August to the coldest practices in November and on to the 7am lifts in the middle of February; the whole team was there, striving to get better and to succeed. It was that bond amongst ourselves that kept me with this program and which I will continue to remember for a long time.
JARED BLAIS '09 (Management; Troy, N.Y.)
I transferred to RPI after being at a program that really had no cohesiveness. As soon as I came here I really felt like I was part of something special. Here at RPI the football team becomes your second family. Everyone from Coach King and the rest of the coaching staff to the players really care about you and are always there for you no matter what. We put a lot of time in together, whether it is during morning workouts, film or practice. It truly is an honor to be a part of this program and is something I will remember for the rest of my life. This experience has helped mold me into the person I am today and I am thankful for that.
HONORIO BORBA ‘06 (Mechanical Engineering; Freeville, N.Y.)
The people and the coaches have made my time here at Rensselaer so special. The first time I came here and met the people on the team and the coaches I knew I would love it here. Everyone was very friendly and motivated to succeed. I have made life long friends with my teammates and coaches that I could not have gotten anywhere else. I cherish the memories I have made here with everyone and will keep this winning attitude I have acquired from everyone for my whole life.
JON BRANCHE ’07 (Management; Schenectady, N.Y.)
My teammates and the relationships I have developed with them. The grueling 7am workouts with the most loyal sports members at RPI. The dedication of the coaching staff and players to become the best people they can be. The memorable games, from the Blizzard Bowl to the comebacks we had. The feeling before games knowing you have a chance to win every game. The preparation for what lies ahead.
DARRYL BROWN '11 (Mechanical Engineering; Hollis, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been the most unforgettable four years of my life. What has really made my time at RPI special is all of the different people I have had an opportunity to meet and the friends I have made. I have met people from all walks of life and have shared experiences with these people that will remain with me for the rest of my life. RPI has provided me with an unique opportunity to excel both in the classroom and on the football field. I will use what I learned from my interactions with my professors, coaches, and friends from my time at RPI and carry it over into my future experiences.
TERRENCE BYNUM ’07 (Management; Brooklyn, N.Y.)
The strong academic and athletic tradition of success here at RPI has enabled me to exploit all my talents. I have acquired skills and knowledge from a world class faculty that will help to guide me through my future endeavors in life.
JERRY CAMPBELL '09 (New Hyde Park, N.Y.)
My time here at RPI has been so special directly because of the people that surround me every day. Everyone from the coaching staff to the training staff truly do care and would do anything to help any of us when we need it. The players I have spent the last four years with have become some of my very best friends and I will never forget the memories that we have made together. I am very grateful to everyone that has been a part of my life here at RPI for preparing me for the future, and I plan on maintaining these relationships even after we part ways.
JOE CARDILLO '12 (Business and Management; Schenectady, N.Y.)
What has made my time at RPI special is the people I have been lucky to meet here. I consider myself extremely blessed to have met so many great people, many of whom I consider myself lucky to call friends. These are the people I know will do great things after they leave RPI. I will never forget them and all they have given to me.
BRYAN CARMODY '12 (Management; Rochester, N.Y.)
The thing that has made these four years at RPI special is the friends that I have made. I am grateful that RPI football has given me the opportunity to meet so many people. I have a lot of great memories with my teammates and plenty of stories to look back on. I’ll miss spending time with my teammates. Shout out to the “80s corner”!
ANTHONY CASALE '08 (Management; Troy, N.Y.)
Playing the game I love with the great friends that I've made here. Being a transfer student, the way that my teammates embraced me is what made this awesome. It's crazy just thinking about how much fun I've had with the new people I've met here in just two years.
NICK CASALE '08, G'09 (Management; Waterford, N.Y.)
What has made my experience at RPI most special to me is this football program. More like a family, the football community is made up of the hardest working people I have ever encountered. From Coach King and the staff to Ort, the training staff and the equipment guys, we are constantly surrounded by quality people who all have our best interests in mind. I have forged long lasting bonds with my teammates, who through blood, sweat and tears have become my brothers. I have had so many of my best memories with people from this program. The years have passed so quickly and now as I reflect on my time here, I am so grateful and privileged to have been a part of such a special group.
FRANK CATELLIER ’07 (Management; Voorheesville, N.Y.)
During my time here at RPI I have learned a lot about myself. Being involved with the football program, I’ve been taught some valuable life lessons such as teamwork, hard work, discipline, as well as time management. I’ve also played with and alongside some great people, including my best friends.
JOSH CHIPPONE '08 (Management; Troy, N.Y.)
When looking back at my time here at RPI there are two things that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. First, RPI has taught me a lot about character, hard work and dedication. All key aspects of not only football, but life as well. The next and greatest memories that I will carry with me are the bonds that I have made with not only the athletic staff, but my teammates as well. I have lived with Tes, Muck, Nick and Kev for three years now and they have become brothers to me. Sharing great times and great memories with the Class of 2008 is something really special to me and I know I have made friends that I can count on for the rest of my life, thanks to RPI Football.
GRANT COCHRAN ’06 (Biomedical Engineering; Kent, Wash.)
I feel like I am a part of a very special football program. The coaches care about more than just my play on the field, and so do the equipment guys, the training staff, and even the Athletic Director. It is hard to count how many people have gone out of their way to help my family and me. I am truly grateful to have had so many people help me and look out for me. The attitude and character of this program is uncommon and I’m grateful I could be a part of it.
NICK COSTA '11 (Management; Yonkers, N.Y.)
When coming to RPI I never thought that I would meet people that could be as close to me as my friends from high school. After going through four years of football and classes with a certain group of people, I feel like I have a new family up here. We have had ups and downs together that have made us become closer and closer each and every year. Whether it was pulling all nighters together, losing big games, or winning big games I know that we have each other's backs and will always be there to help each other. Other than the great friendships that I have made the real thing that made RPI so special to me was my experiences with football. It has made me who I am today. As a freshman I came in thinking I was a talented, smart individual who didn't have to work hard for much. Football has taught me that nothing worth having in life is obtained easily. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It taught me that sometimes I may feel very down and want to quit but that I have to keep pushing and things will get better. These are the reasons RPI has and will always be so special to me.
RAY DAVIS '11 (Civil Engineering; Worcester, Mass.)
While I've made many friends and connections that I plan on keeping for the rest of my life, the ECAC football game was probably the one thing I can think of that made my time at RPI special. Honestly, not many people on the team thought we had a chance. We started sophomores, freshman and two seniors on offense. We ended up winning this game. At the end of the game I received the Most Outstanding Player plaque, followed by my teammates singing happy birthday to me in the middle of the field. This was followed by an amazing party for my birthday. Needless to say, it was the best birthday I've ever had.
DAVE DILLEN '08 (Electrical Engineering; Grand Island, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been made special by being a member of the football team. The people I've met and the experiences I've gone through have made me into the person I am today. I, and all of my teammates, are lucky to have the opportunity to be a part of something so great. Combining that with the quality of the academics at Rensselaer has really prepared me for wherever life may take me after college. My time here may be coming to an end, but the experiences, friendships, and memories will last a lifetime.
SEAN DORAN ’05 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Miami Fla.)
My time at Rensselaer has been made so special because it has required me to mature as a person, to commit myself to something greater than myself, and to dedicate myself to others. I have created experiences that I will never forget, on the field and off! I have found ways to overcome challenges with the help of my teammates. I was involved in the greatest game of football that RPI has ever played. I helped the winningest team in RPI history make it to the National Semi-Finals. So special because people have grown to trust in me, and I have grown to trust in them. That is something very special, because most people never trust anyone. My time in the training room, getting to know Ort and Tony, and finally understanding that they truly do care about the team, mostly the seniors though.
JEFF DOUGLAS ’06 (Aeronautical Engineering & Mechanical Engineering; Chelmsford, Mass.)
During my four years as an RPI student-athlete I have created many fond memories. There are the tailgate parties in North lot after the games, the coaches, the trainers, the mud pit that Anderson and ’86 Field become, Coach King pulling the socks up on the opposing teams field, the road trips, the playoffs, but most importantly my fellow teammates. The comradery and friendships that I created during my career as a player have made my time at Rensselaer truly special.
JOHN ENGSTROM '08 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Branford, Conn.)
The people I have come to call my friends have 100% made my experience at RPI more than anything I could ever ask for.
JOSEPH EVANGELISTA '10 (Mechanical Engineering; Staten Island, N.Y.)
My four years here at RPI has been a series of ups and downs, but there has always been someone lending me a helping hand. Whether that person was a coach, a trainer, or one of my best friends on the team I always knew that I could count on them. The loyalty of this team and the character that you are forced to build is what I will always remember about my time here.
BEN FIL '12 (Civil Engineering; Wynantskill, N.Y.)
What has made my time at RPI special has been my teammates, coaches and entire ECAV staff, especially Ort. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of guys to play football with. Having to deal with some very tough times as a team, I knew there was a group of guys I was going to see every day that were there for me and had my support no matter what. Most of all, however, has been my family. My father, mother and brother have supported me through it all and I cannot thank them enough. I love you guys. The Civil Engineering program has been an awesome experience and I cannot wait to start my career. JYD - Let’s Go Red!
MIKE FIL '10 (Mechanical Engineering; Wynantskill, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been special because I've been able to live up to the true definition of a student-athlete. Division III sports are great because they demand success and hard work both on and off the field. The life lessons learned in football are second to none and being challenged as a student and an athlete has adequately prepared me for the rest of my life.
TIM FRAME ’06 (Computer and Systems Engineering; Scotia, N.Y.)
My time at Rensselaer has been very special due to the people I have met both on and off the football field. I have worked with many talented coaches and teachers and have been inspired by the great friends and teammates I have met here. It is truly the people here at Rensselaer that makes the difference. I know that all the experiences I’ve had and lessons I’ve learned during the past four years will carry with me throughout my life.
SCOTT GALLO ’05 (Management; Mechanicville, N.Y.)
My experience here at RPI has never included a dull moment. The courses have stimulated my mind and challenged me to overcome many unforeseen obstacles. My experience here however, would not be complete without four years of football to go with it. Football here at RPI has taught me more about life than any class could. It has taught me how to challenge myself, overcome obstacles, and be part of something great. I will never forget what being part of this team has done for me.
GREG GOEHLE ’06 (Information Technology; Selden, N.Y.)
Going to Rensselaer has given me the opportunity to experience excellent academics and meet some incredible people. In the time I have spent here, I have learned who I am and who I want to become. This is a place that I will miss, and proud to say I am a part of. In my four years here, I have been able to play on the varsity soccer team as well as the varsity football team, which is something not too many other schools can offer. The football team is like nothing I have ever been a part of, their sense of teamwork and respect for one another is unmatched anywhere else in the school, and I am thankful for the chance to be a part of it.
CHRIS GRAEF '08 (Management; Bethel, Conn.)
The guys around me have been the best part of my four years at RPI. It is without a doubt the greatest group I have ever been a part of and we have shared great times both on and off the field. The coaches have been extremely supportive during my time here and have always pushed me to do my best. I think the overall team mentality we all share is why we have had such successful football careers here, and the friendships I've made will last the rest of my life. I've also learned valuable lessons from both my teammates and coaches that will surely help me in the future.
KOBY GREENE '09 (Civil Engineering; Granville, N.Y.)
Attending a school with an excellent academic program as well as being partof a successful athletic tradition has made my time at RPI special. My teammates, however, have had the biggest impact on my experience. I have made life-long friends here, and with them, created memories that will also last forever.
MIKE GRUBBS '12 (Electronic Media, Arts & Communications; Hampton, N.J.)
It’s hard to really pick one thing out that has triumphed over the rest. My time here has been a combination of fun times with friends and a ton of work on and off the field. You can’t fully appreciate your time here until it’s almost over and you look back at your friends that are leaving you, your teammates that are leaving you, and it hits you hard. I am beginning to understand that this community I have belonged to for these four years, the knowledge I have gained and the relationships I have nurtured, will become ingrained in my character for the rest of my life.
DAVE HANSEN ’05 (Civil Engineering; Averill Park, N.Y.)
The friends I have acquired both in the classroom, through social events, or on the football field have all had a great influence on my time spent here. Also, the guidance I have received through professors, coaches and trainers has helped me to mature in many ways, as well as understand what it will take to be successful for the rest of my life.
BRENT HANSON ’05 (Architecture; Algonquin, Ill.)
Making friends, and playing football. Some of the guys I have met while playing here would do anything for me and I would do anything for them. They have become like family to me. We have been through a lot together and in the end we will always have the experiences we shared on and off the field.
CARL HARDING ’05 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Garnerville, N.Y.)
Rensselaer is so special to me because of all the great opportunities that were presented in my years here. I was blessed to be a part of an amazing athletic program. I learned so many lessons that were vital for success on the field, but will stay with me for many years to come. Rensselaer also provided me a top-notch education. I grew in many ways as a student through the assistance of wonderful, caring professors and resources such as the Learning Advising Center. Lastly, Rensselaer further developed and sharpened my skills as a leader and hard worker, which will lead to many successes in my future. I am so happy and grateful I made the best decision of my life by deciding to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
JUSTIN HASSELKUS '11 (Electronic, Media, Arts & Communication; Rochester, N.Y.)
RPI has given me a chance to get a quality education and play the greatest game on earth for another four years. Everything I have learned here will give me an advantage in the real world.
JUSTIN HEAFY '09 (Biomedical Engineering; Cheshire, Conn.)
Being a part of the football team at RPI has been a truly special experience for me. I've had some incredible experiences as a part of this team and I can't believe its come to an end. The preparation in the offseason, the great times on and off the field, and especially the guys on the team have really made my time at RPI great.
NICK HERRERA '12 (Business and Management; Miami, FL.)
My time at RPI was made special by the outstanding relationships I made. When I first arrived in NY State from Miami, I had a hard time adapting. I had no friends or family with me when I came in freshman year. It was the people around me who helped me feel more comfortable in my new environment.
These people included coaches, professors, advisors, and mainly my football teammates. Although we competed everyday in the classroom and on the field, we were friends no matter what happened. If I ever got down on myself for something I could always count on my friends to be there for me. I do not think I could have stayed at RPI, without this great supporting cast around me.
I consider my stay at RPI a very special one, one that I will never forget. Being an athlete and the relationships I made through competition are the two things RPI has given me that you cannot put a price on. The memories I will look back on are priceless and I am so glad my college experience was exceptional.
PETER HERRICK ’05 (Management; Schuylerville, N.Y.)
I’ve had an opportunity to come to a great school and an opportunity to play college football, which not many people can say, and I am thankful. I’ve learned a lot here through schoolwork but more important I’ve learned intangible things, like unselfishness and togetherness, through football. I’ve made my best friends at RPI through football and we’ve enjoyed incredible success along the way. Not many people get these opportunities and have the success we’ve had. Just knowing that has made my time here at RPI special.
SHAWN HERRMANN ’07 (Aeronautical Engineering & Mechanical Engineering; Phoenix, N.Y.)
I think that my teammates and coaches have made my time at RPI special. Having the opportunity to play football here has shaped me into the person I am today and has taught me a lot of self discipline. Nothing can really describe the feeling of getting ready before a game together, going out on the field with one common goal, and purpose and knowing that the guy next to you wants the win just as much as you do. Just competing, making friends and memories that will last forever.
RAMSES JIMENEZ ’05 (Management; Buchanan, N.Y.)
My time at Rensselaer has been so special because of what the football program has given me over the years and the friendships I have made. Football has been an important part of my life and I know that the lessons I learned over the years will continue to be useful for years to come. These past four years have been the best years of my life. The memories I am going to keep include, my first game on varsity as a freshman against Plymouth St., getting my first sack, which was against WPI, beating Union, the Blizzard Bowl against Ithaca and of course, the Semi-Final game against St. John’s in Minnesota. Even though there are plenty of football memories there are even more memories and stories that I will remember that are outside of football. I did a lot of learning and growing up within these years and Rensselaer has been a great teacher.
IAN JOHNSON '08 (Chemical Engineering; Brick, N.J.)
The people I met at RPI have made my time here very special. I was blessed with the chance to continue my football career at RPI and also a chance to join Greek Life, where I have met some of my best friends. I may have never come to RPI if it were not for football, joining such a program has given me the opportunity to learn a lot from my coaches and I feel it has helped me become a better athlete as well as a better person. With all the experiences that I have gained throughout my tenure here I feel as though I will be more prepared to handle the challenges that face me in the future.
KEVIN JORDAN ’07 (Management; Bluffton, S.C.)
The players on this team have made my time at RPI special. The unity, loyalty, and commitment we have shared towards each other have developed into many special friendships and an enjoyable college experience.
BRETT KEBEA ’07 (Electrical Engineering; East Greenbush, N.Y.)
I would have to say that the people I have met and gone through the past four years with were what have made RPI special to me. We have all faced the same challenges, and many of them we faced and overcame together. They have shaped my life at RPI just as much if not more then the classes I have taken. Without them, I doubt I would have enjoyed myself as much as I have.
JOSH KELLER '12 (Civil Engineering; Cobleskill, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been special for many reason but the ones that stand out the most over the four years have been the guys I have met and bonded with on the football team. The times that have been spent on and off the field with my teammates have made my time at RPI memorable. The bonds I have made with the guys here will be irreplaceable and forever memorable.
ALEXANDER KELSEN '09 (Mechanical Engineering; Marcellus, N.Y.)
RPI is very special to me mainly because of the people I have met within its community. Within the RPI football program I have come to know so many great people that I now call my family. From the so many great players that have my back no matter what, to the amazing coaches and staff who I respect and look up to, to the family and alumni I have met. I have shared so many great times and learned so much which has ultimately helped turn me in to the person I am today.
DAVID KENOYER ’06 (Aeronautical Engineering; Plattsburgh, N.Y.)
My time here has been special because of the people I have met, and the things I have learned. I think RPI has made me a better and more complete person, and I am thankful to everyone who was involved in that process. I will fondly look back on my time here, and the people I have been a classmate, student, colleague, and teammate of.
T.J. KIEPER '08 (Mechanical Engineering; Selkirk, N.Y.)
The thing that has made my time at RPI special is most definitely the people. I have created life-long friendships with a number of people who I may not have gotten the opportunity to meet outside of my four years here at RPI, both on the football team and in the classroom.
COLIN KING '11 (Management; Glenmont, N.Y)
RPI is special because such a diverse group of people comes together with a common goal in mind. The blood and sweat shed with your teammates creates bonds that will never be broken for the rest of your life.
JONATHAN KNAUST '09 (Mechanical Engineering; North Syracuse, N.Y.)
Coming into RPI I didn't know what to expect. I was quickly met with challenges both on the field and in the classroom which tested my character. My teammates and coaches have helped me overcome all of these challenges, and being a part of this great program has made my time here at RPI special and is something I am very grateful for.
MIKE KUKESH '11 (Civil Engineering; Exeter, N.H.)
Rensselaer is a special place full of special people. My time at RPI has been extremely memorable and positive. The rigors and challenges of the academics are coupled with the challenges of a strong athletic program. Coach King and his entire staff have given me so much in these four years. RPI football placed me in the best positions to be successful both on and off the field. Coach King, the coaching staff, trainers, and equipment managers are a first-class example of character. I am so grateful for the time I was able to spend here at RPI and to be a part of the extraordinary tradition that is RPI.
ADAM LoGIUDICE ’07 (Architecture; Massapequa, N.Y.)
RPI is special to me in a different way than anyone because this school gave me more opportunity than I could ever have hoped for. Not many colleges would make it possible to play two varsity sports as well as take architecture. Because of this opportunity I have met many people that have impacted my life in a positive way. RPI has been the main catalyst for my personal growth.
SCOTT LOUDIS ’05 (Management; Cohoes, N.Y.)
My time at Rensselaer has been so special because of the great opportunities it has created. Playing college football with the type of camaraderie that exists at RPI is priceless. Whether it be in the classroom or on the game field, Rensselaer has allowed me to experience college at its finest.
DAVE LUTIAN '08 (Aeronautical Engineering; Milford, Conn.)
My time at RPI has been special because of the people that have surrounded me here, especially within the football program. The coaching staff, trainers, equipment technicians, athletic staff, and especially my teammates have made my experience here one of a kind; one I wouldn't trade for anything. The goal of the coaches and staff here isn't to just win football games; they want to make each young man that walks through the door a more honorable, responsible adult. There is an abundance of support for this program from friends, family, and alumni of all ages, and I think that goes to show just what a special organization the RPI football program is. Also, there's no other place in the world like '86 Field. It is truly one of RPI's great icons, and I am lucky to be fortunate enough to have played on it.
KEVIN MacCRACKEN '08 (Mechanical Engineering; Scotia, N.Y.)
My time at Rensselaer has been special for many reasons. I have had a number of great experiences as a part of the RPI football team. Sharing challenges, hard work, successes, and lots of laughs throughout the past four years with my best friends has been the time of my life. The lessons learned from Coach King and memories that we have made are things that I will never forget.
JOE MANDARA ’05 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Middletown, N.Y.)
My four years at Rensselaer would not have been as special without every one of my teammates. Throughout my four years here, they have always been there for me. Playing football at Rensselaer has been the most rewarding experience of my life. Practicing for two hours everyday was my time to get away from school and just focus on football and have fun doing it. My teammates helped me to fully appreciate hard work, dedication and most of all, friendships. Being a student at Rensselaer would not have been such a unique experience if I was not a student-athlete.
ERIC MARCIANO '12 (Business and Management; Ballston Spa, N.Y.)
What has really made my time here at RPI so special, aside from the valuable education I am receiving, are definitely the invaluable relationships I have established with my classmates, and especially those with my teammates. I have played alongside many different guys from all over the country while here and have established some close friendships with a lot of them. I know I will be friends with some of these guys long after I have graduated from here. They have really helped to make my experience here an enjoyable one.
BRANDON MARSHALL '11 (Business and Management; Boca Raton, Fla.)
What has made my time at RPI special would have to be the teammates that I have had for all four years of my collegiate career. The fraternity of RPI football players I have associated myself with have shared some of the highest and lowest moments we have ever faced in our lives. This group of guys have definitely made my time at RPI that much better compared to if I was not playing. I would also say the coaching staff have made my time here special. After the hard work put in during the offseason and summer workouts, they have given me the opportunity to play for this football program that is so rich in tradition. Ever since Coach King came and visited me all the way down in South Florida to interest me into coming to RPI, I knew that there was something special about this place, and I am glad I chose to come here.
JEFF McCORMICK '11 (Civil Engineering; East Schodack, N.Y.)
I think the biggest thing I'll take away from my time at RPI is the relationships with the people I have met through the years and the memories we've created together on and off the field. Through these memories and experiences, I have matured and grown as an individual into the person I am today. Everyone from the coaching staff, athletic staff, trainers, equipment techs to professors, truly care about each individual and their overall success here at RPI. Coach King cares more about each individual and their success in the classroom and on the field than any coach I have ever come across. The amount of support, both academically and athletically, made available to you here is limitless. I can't say enough good things about Ort and the job his staff does to get us ready to play in times of injury. I am fortunate enough to have played on historic '86 Field and I feel that one of the reasons we are able to have such nice, up-scale facilities to perform in today is the result of years of hard work that the people I have previously mentioned put in. I have made memories here that I will never forget, bonds that will never be broken, with friends who will remain close to my heart long after graduation, and for that I am forever grateful.
JAMES McLAUGHLIN '09 (Civil Engineering; Foxboro, Mass.)
RPI provides students with a great platform to excel in both school and athletics. In my four years here, I have had the opportunity to make strong relationships with my teammates, coaches, students, and professors. I will never forget the practices, meetings, and workouts that allowed me to be successful on game days. RPI has helped me grow as a person and given me many memories that will last a lifetime.
BRENDAN McGOWAN '08 (Management; Mesa, AZ)
I could have never imagined where I am today when I made the decision to attend RPI. I feel so blessed to have been a part of the football program here and become part of a larger family. Being a part of this football team has challenged me, helped me learn and grow as a person and created bonds that will last a lifetime. I am so thankful for Coach King and his staff, Ort and the training staff, and the equipment guys who have always been there for me and who have helped me along the way. This program is like no other and I am proud and grateful to say I have been a part of it.
KAHLY MEROT '09 (Management; New Windsor, N.Y.)
What has made my time at RPI special is the RPI Football program. Having this group of people as teammates and coaches has been a blessing to me because, never had I been around such a diverse, yet close knit group of people. We all really enjoy being around one another. We're family. I cherish every moment I've been a part of this program.
MATT MERROW ’07 (Aeronautical Engineering; Keene, N.H.)
Over the years playing football at RPI I have been involved in a lot of great wins, and some real tough losses. When asked what about this school was special to me, of course, the football program is at the top of the list. But, it’s the guys that I play with, the guys that make sure we are all up to get to the 7am lifts or meetings. It’s the guys that you know are at home lifting over the summer that motivates you to lift yourself. Through all the wins and losses, it’s the guys that you play with. In my case it’s also the guys I live with that make it memorable. All in all, it’s the people around me that have made my time here at RPI special.
PHIL MONTICCIOLO '12 (Civil Engineering; Long Valley, N.J.)
The thing that I cherish most about my time at RPI and what is most special to me has been the four years I spent as a member of the football team. I am truly proud to be a part of such a great program and to have played alongside such exceptional athletes and teammates. I also greatly appreciate the fact that I was able to be a part of Coach King’s legacy and tradition in his last three years at RPI, as well as a part of the new system this year. In the end, I guess what makes this experience so special to me is the team, my teammates, and the experiences we had as a group. The memories that I have of RPI football with my teammates will never be forgotten. These guys have been my family, and we have gone through a lot together. They are my brothers and friends for life, and have made this experience the best four years of my life.
TIM MORAN '12 (Civil Engineering; Syracuse, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been special because of the players I’ve had a chance to be around. These guys are some of my closest friends and having the opportunity to work with them has really made me value the time I’ve been here. Coach King and this year Coach Falbo are two guys that made me really appreciate the game and what it meant to play for the Engineers and how to be a better person and teammate. I’d also like to thank my parents, brother, sister and Meghan for making it to my games. Love you guys!
BRAD MORGAN ’05 (Computer Science; Germantown, Pa.)
I think my time at RPI has been made special by the people that I have met here at RPI. The friends that I have made and the professors that I have had the chance to learn from all have affected me in many different ways. I have had an excellent experience at RPI and hope to remain in contact with all the people that I have met.
JIMMY MOTZKIN ’05 (Civil Engineering; Lynnfield, Mass.)
Being a part of collegiate sports at Rensselaer has helped make my college experience a memorable one. I loved that I was given the opportunity to continue playing football and throw the javelin for the track & field team; it was a chance I would never want to let pass me by. Not only has it been fun, but I have made some incredible friendships with the members of my team. Spending time with the guys is something that I will miss the most. We have had some unbelievable times together. I hope to stay in touch with all my teammates, and I want to thank them, and my coaches, for giving me memories that I will carry with me long after I graduate.
BOB MUNIER '11 (Management; Wyckoff, N.J.)
While my time at RPI has been filled with a number of great things, the friendships I have created with members of the football team are what stand out most. Looking back on my freshman year, I would never have guessed that some of the strangers I met on day 1 would become some of my best friends today. I could not have asked for a better group of people to share my four years with, and I look forward to maintaining those relationships for the rest of my life.
PETER NILSON '11 (Architectrue; Appleton, Wisc.)
The sense of family that you develop within RPI Football makes this a special program. From the moment you report to your first camp to your last game as a senior, your relationships with teammates and coaches goes beyond the field. Your are treated with respect, but even more is expected by not only your teammates, but by those who have been part of the program's rich history. What has made my experience even more memorable at RPI has been the opportunity to experience playing on historic '86 Field and ECAV. Although the facilities may change, the tradition and honor of RPI Football will never change.
DAN OLIMPIO '11 (Management; Yonkers, N.Y.)
RPI has been an unbelievable experience for me. The friendships I have made will last my entire lifetime. My fellow teammates have meant the most to me. Coming in as a freshman I knew making friends would be somewhat intimidating but being on a team such as RPI Football made me feel welcome. The people on the team I consider a part of my family. I would do anything for these guys and I know that they will do the same for me, and that is what means so much to me. All of us have been through all of the offseason workouts, big wins and hard breaking losses. We have shed blood, sweat and tears out on that field which makes me proud to call myself a part of this football team. RPI and all the people I have met here will always have a special place in my heart, but my teammates and staff I will never forget and that is what makes this place so special.
CHRIS O'NEIL '11 (Architecture; Foxboro, Mass.)
What has made my time at RPI special has been the people. I've carried an excessive time commitment since I've gotten here, between five years of
architecture, four years of football and being a member of Pi Lambda Phi. My success anywhere could not have been possible if it weren't for the friends, professors, teammates, coaches and brothers I've been surrounded by since I came here four years ago. They've helped me organize my responsibilities while understanding what I can do and where I can be, and that's been special.
MATT PISANO ’06 (Mathematics; Toms River, N.J.)
As my career at RPI comes to an end, I have no doubt in my mind that my decision not only to attend RPI, but also to participate in the football program has been the best and most rewarding of my life. The thing that has made my time here so special has been the people - my teammates, coaches, trainers, and everyone else in the athletic department. The experiences that I have had with them in the past four years have created bonds and friendships that will last forever. It has been an honor to be part of such a first-rate athletic program.
DANNY PIZZARELLI ’06 (Management; Poughkeepsie, N.Y.)
Rensselaer has been so special because, coming from Hudson Valley Community College, I never had a tight knit group like the kids here. Everyone was always for himself. Here, everyone is always about the team first, and I like that. Also, I made a lot of friends that I will have for the rest of my life. I also like the comradery that football brings to the table. Finally, this school challenges you academically and athletically, which is the best of both worlds.
DAVE POMPEI ’07 (Management; Burnt Hills, N.Y.)
The single most important thing that has made my time at RPI special are the friendships I have made. Whether they are with fellow teammates, classmates, or coaches, I’ve developed quality relationships with individuals that will last a lifetime. From being on the football team here at RPI I have learned many important values that will carry over to the rest of my life, such as teamwork, dedication, and discipline. I’m excited to take on upcoming challenges in my life knowing I’ve been adequately prepared.
JAMES PORAMBO '08 (Chemistry; Jim Thorpe, PA)
What has made my experience here so special is how much it has prepared me for life after college. The challenges I have faced both on the field and in the classroom have shown me that hard work and dedication can help you accomplish anything and I am sure I will carry that idea with me when I move on. On top of that, RPI has given me a group of friends I will never forget and will always be there for me when I leave.
JORDAN RAMIREZ '12 (Business and Management; Amsterdam, N.Y.)
RPI has shown me a lot of over my four years. The most significant event of my career was probably beating Union my freshmen year on ’86 Field. That game showed me how much tradition we have here as a program and how proud I was to be an Engineer. Go Red!
PETER RANKIS '09 (Mechanical Engineering; Acton, Mass.)
When I arrived at Rensselaer I was a nervous teenager three hours from home and had no idea what to expect. I was quickly greeted by friendly, honest people. This was true from top to bottom; from coaches, professors and upperclassmen all the way down to my fellow classmates. The people that make up this institute are what make this a very special place. Throughout my stay here at Rensselaer the people around me have always impressed me with their honesty, charisma and diversity. I will miss Rensselaer dearly, and all the friends I have made here.
TOM RAYHILL '08 (Mechanical Engineering; Grand Island, N.Y.)
RPI presented me with the unique opportunity to play college football and also get a world-class education at the same time. I think the people here are the most special part of my experience though. My teammates, the coaches, trainers, and support staff here all have made my time at RPI an experience I will never forget. I've built relationships that will last a lifetime and certainly have helped make me the person I am today.
JASON REED '08 (Information Technology; Cohoes, N.Y.)
Besides the 7am lifts in the middle of the winter, RPI has been special because of my teammates and its winning tradition. Transferring from a different school and sport was hard but the diverse personalities on the team made it easier. Also, to be a part of a team that expects to win every game is special and not easily found elsewhere.
JIMMY ROBERTSON '09 (Management; Yonkers, N.Y.)
This is my family-my teammates, Coach King and the coaching staff, Ort and the training staff, and the guys in the Cage. On and off the field these are the people that I have shared many laughs and memories with. Everything from winning the Dutchman Shoes three years in a row, to winning last second games, to pulling pranks on each other in the locker room before practice - it has all been a blast. It has come and gone so quick, but my time here at RPI is something I will cherish and remember for the rest of my life.
GRANT SANVILLE '08 (Mechanical Engineering; Westfield, VT)
For me it's the atmosphere. Not only have I had the opportunity to challengemyself in the classroom but as well as an athlete on the football field. I first found RPI as a unique and special place because of its great tradition. However as graduation approaches I find it's not the Institute that I will miss but the many friendships I have made, especially those of my teammates and coaches.
EREN SAVASLI '09 (Management; Brooklyn, N.Y.)
The main reason why RPI has been so special to me is the people I have met. I have made life long friends in my former and present teammates. The memories I have shared with them are ones I will never forget. The coaches have also been special to me. They have helped me become the man I am today and helped me open doors for my future. The football program has not only allowed me to compete at a top-notch level but it has prepared me for the rest of my life.
JULIAN SCHNOPP '12 (Civil Engineering; Dalton, Mass.)
What has made RPI football so special besides throwing the helmet on and running into the stadium is the friends I made along the way. Through the four years here we’ve had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows but what made it so great was celebrating the highs and coming together to battle through the lows with your boys. It really is like a family atmosphere. We do everything together. What I’m always going to remember are the guys I showed up to ECAV with day after day whether it was to suffer through a rainy cold practice or to beat up on Union under the lights. I certainly have a few more brothers now.
STEFAN SCHULZ '10 (Management; Bradford, Mass.)
What has made my time here at Rensselaer special has been the memories I have made on and off the field as well as the support staff. The support
that RPI football players have is immeasurable. Throughout my collegiate career we have stressed "together" as a team objective. This mentality helped all our players through every situation, whether in hard times or sharing memories of great wins. Rensselaer Football has made me a better individual and I wouldn't trade that for anything.
RYAN SCOTT '11 (Materials Engineer; Rhinebeck, N.Y.)
"My time at RPI has been special because it has challenged me as a person,
student and a player. RPI football is a special program that is built on
perseverance, hard work and dedication. I am proud to be part of a program
that knows what is possible through commitment and I am grateful for the
experiences that I have shared with my teammates, friends, and coaches."
ZACH SCRUGGS '12 (Business and Management; Auburn, GA)
All my brothers on the team that I have had a chance to grow with over the years.
JOE STENZ '12 (Business and Management; Gulfstream, FL.)
RPI is my family away from home. I am lucky enough to have 100 brothers who care as much about me as I do them. My two brothers, Phil and John, are my best friends and my 98 other brothers quickly became my best friends throughout my four years. My coaches, trainers, and the support staff have been there to guide me through some difficult times my freshman year and I was able to overcome those challenges and thrive on the football field and in the classroom. After my parents, they are the most influential people I know.
DAN STEPHENS ’05 (Biomedical Engineering; Brewster, N.Y.)
My time at Rensselaer has been made special by my relationship with the guys on this football team. It has by far been my most important experience in college. By making a serious commitment and working hard with all of them, they have become my best friends. I will never forget my football days at RPI.
TJ STRUNK '12 (Business and Management; W. Palm Beach, FL.)
My time spent at RPI has been special. As a transfer, I have not spent as much time at RPI as the rest of the seniors but I am thankful to all of my friends for making it such an easy transition and showing me such a great time over the last two years. I have made memories both on the field and off that will stay with me forever. I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to attend such a great school while continuing to play the sport that I love so much.
DOUG TEATOR ’06 (Civil Engineering; Chatham, N.Y.)
At Rensselaer you face a lot of adversity on the football field and in the classroom. Football has taught me that teamwork can help overcome this adversity and can also help a collection of individuals reach even greater goals than ever possible by one person. These relationships and moments you experience, as a part of the team will never be forgotten.
JOHN TESIERO '08 (Management; Amsterdam, N.Y.)
RPI has been a special place for me because of my teammates. I have made life-long bonds with people I once never knew. We have had great times both on and off the field. These last four years have taught me life lessons, and I would like to thank our coaches and my teammates for that.
GREG THOMAS '09 (Aeronautical Engineer; Langhorne, PA)
All the great people that I met along the way. The bonds formed with all the guys on the team. The experiences and memories made with friends. The coaching staff making sure that we are prepared for both our opponent and the rest of our life.
ANDREW UTSCHIG '08 (Management; Harrison, N.Y.)
My time at RPI has been amazing, a rollercoaster at times, but in the end by far definitely the best experience of my life. The guys in the program, the coaches, and especially the other seniors have made my time so great here. We are all really lucky to be part of this team, and it's tough to see that sometimes until the end is near. The camaraderie on a football team, especially this one, is unparalleled in anything else. Every guy in the locker room sweats and bleeds the same, every guy goes through the same thing, and we do it everyday together, which is what has made my time so special here. The relationship I have built with my coaches, with former players, current players and especially my good friends who I get to graduate with, have made this a special four years for me. When I graduate I know I will have friends for life because of this team and this experience. We have been through so much, and done so much together that the relationship I have built with some of these guys the closest thing I can compare it to is family. I was blessed with two wonderful sisters, but I never had a brother and for a few of these guys they are like brothers to me and they have really been what has made this experience so special.
ADAM VAN HORN ’06 (Aeronautical Engineering; Chatham, N.Y.)
Over my four years of college, nothing has been more special and given me more memories, than RPI Football. Whether it was a scrimmage against Hudson Valley, a JV game at Union, traveling to Minnesota, or simply getting yelled at in practice, nothing has meant more to me than playing for Coach King and the rest of the coaches. The memories and friendships I’ve made as an RPI football player, I will cherish forever … and I wish the team nothing but the greatest success in years to come.
ARMIN WARNER ’07 (Management; Schenectady, N.Y.)
Being a member of the RPI football program has definitely made my time in college extremely special. Not everyone has the opportunity play college athletics while at the same time receive a world-class education. I got this opportunity and am grateful for it everyday. The lifelong friends and relationships I have made while at RPI will be with me forever and I will cherish them as long as I live.
BRAD WILLIAMS ’05 (Industrial and Management Engineering; Verona, N.Y.)
I would have to say the people. Being a part of Greek Life and the RPI football team has taught me a lot about myself. I have made friends that will last a lifetime. Rensselaer has shaped me into the person that I wanted to be, and has set me up for the next stage of my life: the working world. Sustaining a challenging atmosphere both in the classroom and on the football field has enabled me to develop into a leader in both respects. These are skills that will last a lifetime.
OTIS WILLIAMS ’05 (Management; Troy, N.Y.)
The thing that made my time at Rensselaer so special is the fact that I had the chance to play college football with my brother because we have been playing together all of our lives. Another reason is the fact that I met one of my closest friends who I will never forget. If it was not for him, I don’t think I could have made it all four years. Brent Hanson is like a brother for me and he will always be and that is special to me. Here is a little story for you. Last year I had a dream about winning a playoff game. I don’t remember who we were playing but all I can remember is the first person I ran and celebrated with was Brent. The dream actually came true. It was when we were playing Springfield College, where we were the underdogs in the end of November on a windy Saturday afternoon. And I will never forget that or forget him.
DAN YANKLOWSKI ’05 (Biomedical Engineering; Rochester, N.Y.)
As a high school student, I had never even heard of Rensselaer until I met Brian Surace at a football recruitment event; so without RPI football my life would be drastically different. There have been many great moments at this school, but what I’ll remember most are the times spent with the people I’ve met through the football program. The coaching staff, trainers and equipment crew challenged our class for four years and we became better players and better men because of it. My teammates have done the same both on the field and off. They have become my closest friends and I hope that never changes. I can never play college football again but I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to play, and will never forget how it changed my life.
