TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer men's soccer team scored a goal in each half and got 11 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) in shutting out St. Lawrence University, 2-0, at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 8-2-1 overall, including a perfect 3-0 in Liberty League play. The Saints move to 7-5 and 2-2 in the league.

Penny, who recorded his fourth straight shutout in net for RPI, now has six on the season. His 11 saves were a season-high. St. Lawrence goalkeeper Emilio Coletta (Monteal, PQ/ Marianapolis College) made five stops in defeat.

Senior Tim Wisner (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) came off the bench to open the scoring in the 41st minute, putting the host Red Hawks up 1-0. Sophomore Blake Adams (Cedar Grove, NJ/Seton Hall Prep.) delivered a ball over the left side of the Saints defense to Wisner, whose near post shot was partially blocked by Coletta, before it snuck across the goal line.

Rensselaer widened its lead to 2-0 in the 58th minute on a free kick less than yard outside the Saints penalty area. Sophomore Benjamin Poser (Scotts Valley, CA/Scotts Valley) lofted a cross to junior Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) at the far post, who leaped and buried a header for his team-leading fourth tally of the year.

Both sides had a number of chances to score in the last 30 minutes of play, but neither could find finishing touch. Coletta kept St. Lawrence in the game stopping a pair of breakaway chances by RPI freshman Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa).

Saints freshman Brendan Gorman (Ottawa, ON/St. Matthew) led the team offensively with four shots, which all found the target. Seniors Paul LaMarca (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) and Ryan Moore (Keene, NH/Keene) had four shots apiece, with each recording two on goal.

The Red Hawks return to action tomorrow when they host Clarkson at Renwyck Field (2pm). The Saints travel to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar (2pm).
