POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Rensselaer women's soccer team got an early goal as well as a second half marker and the Red Hawks made them stand as they defeated Clarkson, 2-1, in a Liberty League contest.  RPI improves to 6-6-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the league while the Golden Knights are now 3-9-2 and 0-5-0.

Rensselaer came out strong with several shots in the first few minutes, and got on the scoreboard quickly.  With just over six minutes expired, freshman Sara McMurray sent a cross into the penalty area and junior Briana Bet (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) one-timed the pass out of mid-air for the score, her fourth of the season.

RPI added to its lead in the second half when freshman Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, NJ/Mount Saint Mary Academy) settled a cross into the box and found the foot of Sarah Hinz (Swanzey, NH/Monadnock) just a few feet away.  The senior moved just slightly to score on a ground ball to the near corner at 48:41, her second goal of the season.  The Red Hawks continued to put pressure on the Knights, but could not come up with another insurance goal.

The Golden Knights put considerable pressure on the Red Hawks in the final 20 minutes of the contest and Jill Collins (Potsdam, NY) put the Knights on the board with her third goal of the season. Clarkson was playing the ball near the corner when a cross found its way to the foot of Deana Huntley (Canton, NY). The senior then sent a short pass to Collins, who took a high-arching shot from about 20 yards out. Rensselaer goalkeeper Meghan White (Kingston, NY/Kingston) tipped the ball, but was unable to control it and the ball bounced into the net to bring the Knights to within one at 77:25.

RPI outshot Clarkson 15-10 and had a 7-3 lead in corner kicks.  White made three saves for RPI and Caitlin Titus (Dewitt, NY) and Cait Spaeth (Essex, VT) split time to combine for nine saves for the home team.
