Geneva, N.Y. - The fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Rensselaer 3-0 this afternoon on a soggy Cozzens Field. The Herons improved to 11-1-3 overall and 5-0-1 in the Liberty League, while the Red Hawks fall to 6-8-0 on the season and 1-5-0 in the conference.

William Smith notched two first half goals, both off of corner kicks. Twenty-four minutes, 37 seconds into the match, first-year defender Jessie Tarantino (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) headed a corner kick from senior midfielder Rayza Santiago (Webster Schroeder/Webster, N.Y.) into the back of the net. The goal marked Tarantino's first collegiate tally.

At 33:19 Sarah Tarantino (East Aurora/East Aurora, N.Y.) netted one to give the Herons a 2-0 lead. Junior midfielder Megan Stevens (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) booted the corner kick, which deflected off RPI sophomore goalkeeper Meghan White (Kingston/Kingston, N.Y.), directly to Tarantino.

Santiago added a goal for the Herons in the second half at 61:29. She took the shot from the top of the box when the ball came loose after a scramble in front of the goal. Santiago now has two goals on the season.

William Smith held a large 21-2 advantage in total shots, and had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. First-year goalkeeper Amanda Davis (Roxbury/Succasunna, N.J.) picked up her fifth win and one save, while White finished with nine stops for the Red Hawks.

RPI returns to action tomorrow, when they visit Hamilton (2pm).
