TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) swimming & diving teams swept a dual meet with Roger Williams University in the season opener for both schools at Robison Pool on Saturday. RPI's men defeated the Hawks, 209-90, while the women posted a 199-99 victory.
There were a large number multiple winners for both RPI teams, including Rensselaer juniors
Aimee Catroppa (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and
Meredith Eger (Littleton, CO/Heritage), who each won four events. Individually, Catroppa was victorious in the 50-butterfly (28.37), the 500-freestyle (5:35.08) and the 100-fly (1:02.69) while Eger won the 200-free (2:04.50), 100-backstroke (1:04.33) and the 200-individual medley (2:19.33).
Both swimmers each won in the relay events as well as Catroppa anchored the 200-freestyle team to victory (1:47.92) and Eger swam the first leg of the 200-medley team (1:58.16).
On the men's side, junior
Brian Roth (Columbia, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) had a solid afternoon, picking up individual victories in the 100-fly (55.99) and the 100-backstroke (55.96) while sophomore
Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) also had two wins in the 50-free (22.76) and 100-free (50.22). Both swimmers competed on the victorious 200-medley relay squad as well which posted a time of 1:41.80.
In the diving events, senior
Matthew Culen (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) had a solid day off both boards, posting a score of 261.45 off the 1-meter board and 290.93 off the 3-meter to finish first in each event. The women's competition saw Roger Williams' Cara Naylor (Windsor, CT/Windsor) captured the 1-meter with a score of 217.05 while RPI's
Kelsey Manley (Southbury, CT/Sacred Heart) won the 3-meter event by a score of 202.43.
Rensselaer, which is coached by Shannon O'Brien, is back in the pool on Saturday when it travels to Ithaca College in a dual meet beginning at 1pm.
