AMHERST, Mass. – The Rensselaer women's basketball team earned an 88-28 win over New York City College of Technology in the consolation game of the 2008 Amherst College Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament. The RPI Red Hawks move to 1-1 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-2.
Leading the Red Hawks in scoring for the second time in as many days was senior
Whitney Coleman, whose 16 points and five rebounds Sunday earned her All-Tournament Team honors. Earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team for NYCCT was junior Tempest Casey, who had 11 points, 12 rebounds and two steals in the consolation game after leading her team in scoring and rebounding Saturday against Amherst.
Joining Coleman in double figures for the Hawks was
Laura Easterling with 11 points and
Sarah Wetmore,
Kerry Hayes and
Nicole Monroe, who each had 10 points. Monroe added seven rebounds to match first-year
Hillary McKinley, while Coleman finished with a team-high four assists and senior
Elizabeth Barker led all players with five steals.
Sophomore Akela Moses had seven points, two blocks and eight boards for NYCCT, while sophomore Denise Diego connected on all four of her free throw attempts to finish with six points.
The Red Hawks took a 37-1 lead on an Easterling three pointer with five minutes to play in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets were out-scored just 13-8 the rest of the way to trail 50-9 at the break. The second half was much closer, with RPI scoring 38 points while holding NYCCT to 19.
Rensselaer is back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Albany College of Pharmacy (6pm) in its home-opener at Robison Gym.
