Red Hawks defeat Fighting Saints, 98-67

RUTLAND, Vt. - Senior forward Sam Simmons (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh) recorded a team-high 24 points to lead the Rensselaer men's basketball team to a 98-67 victory over the College of St. Joseph's in non-conference action on Tuesday night.  With the victory, the Red Hawks improve to 3-2 on the season while the Fighting Saints drop to 1-3 overall.

Holding a 45-36 lead on 57.1% shooting after the first half of action, Rensselaer continued to dominate as multiple players added points in the final 20 minutes.  The Red Hawks shot 63.6% from the field in the second half and finished with 60.7% for the game in addition to a 78.3 percentage from the free throw line.

In addition to Simmons, who also had six rebounds, RPI saw junior Jeremy Colon (Manchester, NH/West) add 12 points.  Junior Tim Rupp (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) added 11 points and five rebounds while sophomore Jeremy Bull (Woodbridge, VA/St. Stephens & St. Agnes School) contributed nine points.

For the Fighting Saints, three players recorded double digit efforts, including a game-high 25 points by Tyler Herrington.  He also had a game-best nine rebounds.  Brad Drysdale added 16 points while Douglas Childs had 13 points.

The Red Hawks return to the court on Thursday night when they host Southern Vermont College at 6pm at the Robison Gym.  They close out the week against Wentworth Insitute of Technology on Saturday also at Robison Gym (3pm).  Live stats for both games will be available at http://www.sidearmstats.com/rpi/mbball/.
