SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team scored four unanswered goals on its way to defeating Rutgers-Newark, 5-1, in the Union College Invitational. The season opening victory, which featured five different goal scorers, came in the debut of RPI's new head coach, Cord Farmer.
Rensselaer freshman midfielder
Alexandra Fontanetta (Neshanic Station, NJ/Mount Saint Mary Academy) also had an impressive debut, scoring the first goal of the game and assisting on the game-winning marker. She scored unassisted on a free kick from the top of the box at the 27:21 mark and then set up
Sarah Hinz's (Swanzey, NH/Monadnock) breakaway goal with a ball through the right side at 46:22.
Just 3:04 later, RPI senior
Judy Kastner (West Islip, NY/West Islip) won the ball 10 yards out and scored into the lower right corner.
Junior midfielder
Briana Bet (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and junior forward
Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA/Milton Academy) added insurance goals at 69:45 and 89:31, respectively.
Rutgers-Newark got its goal at 35:53, tying the game at 1-1, off the foot of junior forward Whitney Huber (Rockaway, NJ).
RPI sophomore goalkeeper
Meghan White (Kingston, NY/Kingston) and Rutgers-Newark netminder Kate Renteria (North Bergen, NJ) each turned aside five shots.
Both teams complete competition at the tournament on Sunday. Farmer, who came to Rensselaer from the University of Wisconsin in May, and his team faces SUNY New Paltz at 11am, while Rutgers-Newark takes on Union at 2pm.
