Swimming & Diving Captures Season Openers

Engineers men & women claim a dual meet sweep at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. –Led by winning efforts from a number of swimmers the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving teams defeated Roger Williams University in the season opening dual meet for both teams on Sunday. The Engineers' men defeated the Hawks, 157-142, while the RPI women posted a 172-125 victory.

Senior Kevin Ehrlich (Manchester, CT/Manchester) had a solid opening meet, finishing first in the 200-freestyle (1:51.68) and the 100-freestyle (50.99). Rookie Ben LaRose also had a great afternoon in his collegiate debut, posting wins in the 500-free (5:08.21) and 100-butterfly (54.69). Both Ehrlich and LaRose swam on the victorious 200-free relay, which won in a time of 1:30.25.

Also having a great effort was senior Brian Roth (Columbia, MD/Mount Saint Joseph) and junior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan). Roth won the 50-fly (25.32) and the 100-backstroke (56.10) and also swam on the winning 200-free relay team. Schott claimed victory in the 50-breaststroke (28.08) and the 100-breast (1:01.72).

On the women's side, sophomore Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), who won the 100-fly (1:02.84) and the 100-breast (1:12.20), while also finishing second in the 200-individual medley (2:24.48).

Rookie Tina Belletete also had an outstanding collegiate debut, posting wins in the 500-free (5:33.48), 200-free (2:05.24) and the 100-back (1:03.90).

Senior diver Kelsey Manley (Southbury, CT/Sacred Heart) won the 3-meter event with 220.50 points, while junior Grace Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH/Manchester) picked up the win off the 1-meter board with 197.85.

The Engineers are back in the pool next Saturday for their home opener against Ithaca. Meet time is set for 1pm at Robison Pool.
