TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer women's soccer team scored goals in the first minute of each half and held on to defeat Vassar College, 3-1, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the victory the Engineers improve to 4-6-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Liberty League play. The Brewers fall to 5-5-0 (1-2-0 Liberty).

Junior Danielle Redmond (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional) struck first – just 57 seconds in the match – to give Rensselaer an early 1-0 lead. Senior Briana Bet (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) set up the play, sending a through ball into the right side of the box for Redmond to run onto and finish, near-post.

Less than 10 minutes later, Redmond flicked a header into the area and freshman Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) delivered for the goal, sending another header over Vassar netminder Ali Higgins (Dallas, TX/Ursuline Academy) and into the back of the net.

The Engineers opened the second half by drawing a penalty kick just 37 seconds in. Maguire buried a shot into the top left corner of the net for her second goal of the game and team-leading eighth of the season, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

In the 46th minute, the Brewers found the score sheet on an indirect free kick from just outside the six-yard box. Sophomore Alix Zongrone (Spartanburg, SC/Dorman) gave a touch to the top of the ball for junior Allison McManis (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) who ripped it past RPI goalie Melissa Pinsonneault (Hudson, NH/Bishop Guertin).

Vassar threatened to pull within a goal in the 65th minute, but junior Carolyn Demougeot's (Potomac, MD/French International) shot from inside the 18 was cleared off the line by RPI sophomore Catherine Harvey (Portland, OR/Liberty).

Redmond finished with a goal and an assist, while Maguire tallied two goals. Pinsonneault earned her second career win making six saves, while Higgins totaled five stops for Vassar.

The Engineers continue their Liberty League schedule next weekend at Union and Skidmore. RPI visits the Dutchwomen on Friday (4pm), before heading to Saratoga Springs to take on the Thoroughbreds on Saturday (2pm). The Brewers face Skidmore on Friday (4pm) and Union on Saturday (4pm).
