Box Score

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Allysen Weidner gave Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) the lead, but Brown University grabbed a third period score of its own and held on for a 1-1 tie in ECAC Women's Hockey action at the Houston Field House. The Engineers move to 4-6-4 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play, while the Bears are now 1-4-3 with a 0-3-3 ECAC Hockey mark.

Holding a 1-0 lead after the first two periods, Rensselaer saw its advantage erased as freshman Kelly Griffin (Apex, NC/Assabet Valley) scored at 3:41 of the final stanza. Junior Erica Kromm (Naramata, BC/Team BC U-18) garnered the lone assist after she fought for the puck at the top of the right circle and sent a pass down along the boards. Griffin collected it and skated across the circle, lifting a shot top-shelf over the shoulder of the RPI goalie.

Despite late surges by both squads, neither team could light the lamp, forcing overtime. The extra session saw RPI hold a dominate 6-1 lead in shots as the Engineers fought to tally the game-winner. Senior Whitney Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) had a number of chances from point-blank range, but Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) was up to the task. She finished with 37 saves in the contest.

Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary's) put the homestanding Engineers up 1-0 late in the opening period after her shot from the neutral zone took an awkward bounce up over the glove of the Brown goalie at 16:12.

The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as they held a 12-2 shot advantage over the Bears. RPI had a number of opportunites in the frame, including multiple shots by junior Kendra Dunlop (Granum, AB/Warner Hockey School) and freshman Taylor Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Jr. Hawks), but could not score.

RPI saw Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) post 16 saves in the draw. With tonight's contest she became the program's all-time leader in games started with 63. van der Bliek currently holds the school record for minutes played in a career (3784:59) and is just two games shy of tying former netminder Rosina Schiff '06 for career games played.

Rensselaer is back on the ice next Saturday, when it heads to Durham, N.H., for a 5pm tilt against fourth-ranked New Hampshire. Brown is also in action next weekend, hosting Dartmouth and Harvard on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
