TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team saw all 12 players in the lineup score at least two points as the Engineers defeated Paul Smith's 67-4 in non-conference action at East Campus Arena on Sunday. With the win, RPI improves to 3-5, while the Bobcats fall to 0-2.
Rensselaer dominated the first 20 minutes of play, led by 10 points from junior
Allison Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson). The Engineers played solid defense, working the boards and taking advantage of 19 first-half turnovers by the visitors. RPI went into the halftime holding a 47-0 lead over the Bobcats.
The second half of action continued to see the Engineers dominate offensively, going on a 9-0 run through the first five minutes of the half.
The Bobcats finally broke onto the scoreboard at 12:26 on a jump shot by junior Megan Long (Kane, PA), but RPI scored the next nine points to go ahead by 63 points (65-2) with 7:18 remaining.
Paul Smith's added two more points off a pair of free throws by freshman Kaitlin Hansen (Worcester, NY), but that would be as close as the visitors would get before time expired.
Leading the way for the Engineers was Connor, who finished with a game-best 13 points. Sophomore
Lauren Hayes (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) posted 11 points, while senior
Amanda Brophy (Scituate, MA/Milton Academy) rounded out the top three with eight points.
Rensselaer is now idle until January 2-3 when it competes at the Wheaton College Holiday Tournament. The Engineers take on Husson at 3pm in the first game on the Jan. 2. Paul Smith's also heads into a holiday break, returning January 12th at Clarkson (7pm).
