CHICOPEE, Mass. – Sophomore
Felicia Bua allowed just one run on two hits and the Rensselaer softball team scored eight runs on the sixth inning to beat Elms College, 10-1, at Condon Field. With the win the Red Hawks improve to 21-6, while the Blazers fall to 15-12.
RPI's big sixth inning was set up by a pair of bunt singles from leadoff hitter
Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY/Ellenville) and sophomore second baseman
Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Rome). Freshman
Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) followed with a two-run double. The Red Hawks batted around in the inning with Finkbeiner delivering her second hit of inning, which scored runs eight and nine of the game.
Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) retired the Blazers in order in the bottom of the inning to earn her team-leading eighth win of the year. She surrendered one run on two hits over 6.0 innings to earn the complete game victory. She recorded seven strikeouts and no walks.
The game was scoreless until the Red Hawks plated two runs in the top of the fifth. Bailey reached on error to open the inning, and advanced to second on a base-hit off the bat off sophomore
Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy). After a walk loaded the bases, sophomores
Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) and
Jessica Sitzer (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) each came through with RBI-singles.
Elms came back with a run in the bottom of the inning when Alicia Campbell (Stockbridge, MA/Monument Mountain) drove home Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, MA/Mt. Saint Joseph Academy) on a single.
Blazers starter Ani Ramsdell (Gardner, MA/Gardner) also through a complete game, allowing eight runs (10 earned) on 13 hits in 6.0 innings.
The Red Hawks saw five players record two hits, including Rockminski, who went 2 for 2 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Senior
Julianne Bass (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor) finished 1 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBIs.
Rensselaer returns to action on Sunday, when it host 25th-ranked Rochester for a Liberty League doubleheader at Doris Robison Field (1pm).
