TROY, N.Y. – Three different players scored and junior goalie
Alex Penny stopped all five shots he faced as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 3-0 victory over Oneonta State. The Engineers are now 4-0-1 overall, while the Red Dragons suffer their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1-0.
Rensselaer, which entered tonight's contest having not allowed a goal in each of its first four contests, extended its streak to 470:00 minutes in the win.
A defensive tone was set early in the match as RPI and Oneonta State went scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Despite a number of chances, neither team could get past the goaltenders, who faced a combined 13 shots in the opening half.
The scoreless drought was halted in the 66th minute when Engineers senior
Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) headed in the rebound past Red Dragons keeper John Korn (Dix Hill, NY/Half Hollow Hills). A hard shot from senior
Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) was initially saved, but the rebound came loose and deflected high enough to allow the header opportunity by Prom.
Rensselaer made it a 2-0 advantage just over four minutes later after senior
Michael Long (Hopkinton, NH/Hopkinton) spun around a defender and dropped it back to freshman
Tom Kelly (Sherwsbury, England/Shrewsbury School), who rifled the ball into the lower right corner in the 70th minute.
Junior
Bryce Hutchinson's (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) shot into the right corner of the net capped the scoring in the 84th minute for Rensselaer. Settling the ball from about 20-yards out, senior captain
Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) slipped the ball past the defender to the left side where Hutchinson waited for the high shot.
The Engineers finished with the advantage in shots, holding a 17-9 lead in the contest. Oneonta State saw an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal, Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) improved to 3-0-1 on the season, all shutouts, while Korn fell to 5-1 and stopped five shots in the loss for the Red Dragons.
The Engineers return to the pitch on Saturday when they host Ithaca College at 3pm on Renwyck Field. Live stats for that contest can be found at
