TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Whitney Frary had a goal and an assist to lead William Smith College, the fifth-ranked team in the nation, to a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in a Liberty League women's soccer contest at Renwyck Field.
William Smith (6-2; 2-0) took an early lead when sophomore forward Kate Redmond (Bernardsville, NJ/Bernards) scored in the 15th minute when she sent a high shot that careened off the fingertips of the RPI goalie and into the net. Frary (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), who passed the ball back to Redmond following a corner kick, tallied the assist.
That was the only goal of the first half, which saw the visiting Herons hold an 8-3 advantage in shots.
Frary doubled the visitors' lead in the 89th minute when she picked up the ball on the left side, dribbled toward the net and took a shot that sailed over the goalie's hands. The goal was Frary's second of the season. She now has seven points on the year.
William Smith sophomore Amanda Davis (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) finished with three saves, while Rensselaer freshman
Melissa Pinsonneault (Hudson, NH/Bishop Guertin) stopped four shots. The Herons held a 12-8 bulge in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
RPI (3-6-1; 0-2) returns to action next Saturday against league foe Vassar College at Renwyck Field (4pm). William Smith is next on the field on Wednesday at Ithaca College (4pm).
