RPI women defeat Dutchwomen, 135-105; Engineers men fall to Union, 145-98

TROY, N.Y. – Powered by three victories apiece from freshmen Tina Belletete and Mairead Lyons, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's swimming & diving team defeated Union College, 135-105 in dual meet action on Friday at Robison Pool. The men's squad fell to the Dutchmen, 145-98.

Belletete (Winchendon, MA/Gardner), the Liberty League Rookie of the Year, continued her outstanding rookie campaign on Friday, posting wins in the 1000-freestyle (11:03.04) and the 200-backstroke (2:15.31), while Lyons (Leominster, MA/Notre Dame Academy) was victorious in the 200-free (2:00.95) and the 500-free (5:23.32).

Both swimmers, along with senior Meredith Eger (Littleton, CO/Heritage) and sophomore Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) helped power the 400-medley relay team to victory in a time of 4:12.68. Eger also picked up a win in the 200-individual medley (2:18.73), while Antonucci won the 200-breaststroke (2:33.16).

On the men's side, senior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) won the 200-breast in a time of 2:14.37, while rookie Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) picked up a victory in the 200-butterfly (2:02.61).

The diving events saw Union sweep both the men's and women's events.

Rensselaer returns to the pool on Saturday afternoon as the men's squad hosts the 2010 Kumpf Invitational at 12pm at Robison Pool. The women are back in action on January 23 as they host the RPI Invitational (12pm).
