KEENE, N.H. – Sophomore striker
Zach Fane's first half goal stood as the eventual game-winner as the Rensselaer men's soccer team defeated Keene State, 1-0, this evening at Owl Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Engineers improve to 6-3-2 overall, while the Owls fall to 8-4-2.
Fane (Troy, NY) scored the only goal of the game at the 15:03 mark of the first half. Fane went around the right side and sent a crossing ball into the box that deflected off a KSC defender into the net.
Fane had a chance to add to Engineers' lead early in the second half, but his close-range shot was blocked by a pair of Owl defenders.
Freshman Scott Douglas (East Greenwich, RI) had one of the few offensive opportunities for KSC, which had just one shot on goal in the game. Douglas cut in on a partial break, but RPI senior goalie
Alex Penny (Northport, NY) beat him to the ball.
RPI outshot KSC 11-4 while the Owls had a slim 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Nick Allman (Newburyport, MA) started in goal for KSC and made one save in the first half. Senior Tom Conran (South Windsor, CT) took over in the second half and finished with four saves.
Penny made one save for RPI on the way to notching his sixth shutout of the season.
Both teams return to action on Saturday. Keene State hosts UMass-Boston in a Little East game. RPI travels to Clark University (1:30pm).
