WORCESTER, Mass. – Three different players scored their first goals of the season as visiting Rensselaer shutout host Clark in non-league men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Granger Soccer Complex. The win improves the Engineers' record to 7-3-2, while the Cougars slip to 5-6-2.
The victory for the Engineers gives them three consecutive shutouts and marks the seventh time this season in which they have not allowed their opponent to score a goal.
Sophomore
Jake Tonkel (Los Gatos, Calif.) got the scoring going when he took a feed from
Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and beat Clark keeper Ryan King (Brimfield, Mass.) for the game's first goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Engineers were back at it in the opening moments of the second half when Tambasco got in on the act, notching his first goal of the season with help from
Benjamin Poser (Scotts Valley, Calif.) at the 51:15 mark.
RPI controlled play for the most part, holding a 12-3 edge in shots. King made six saves for the Cougars, while Engineer netminder
Alex Penny (Northport, N.Y.) needed to only make one stop en route to his seventh shutout of the season and the 34th of his career.
The visitors added their final goal in the 89th minute when
Adam Updegrove (Carson City, Nev.) went up the right side and fed a ball to the middle to
Matt Koliopoulos (Franklin, Mass.) for his first goal of the season.
RPI continues its swing through New England on Monday when they visit Williams, while the Cougars return to the field on Saturday at MIT.
