WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Gaston Kelly (Hingham, MA) scored in the 83rd minute to break at 2-all tie and the Williams College men's soccer team went on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 3-2 in non-conference action on Monday. The Ephs, who came into the game ranked third in the nation, are now 9-1-2 overall. The Engineers move to 7-4-2 on the season.
Williams struck first in the contest as Joe Vella (Manlius, NY) headed the ball in off a corner kick from Peter Christman (Falmouth, MA) in the 3rd minute. The Engineers tied things up at the 22nd minute mark as Jake Tonkel (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos) headed a cross from Tyler Iosue (Spofford, NH/Keene) into the net to make it 1-all.
The Ephs, who had a decisive 11-2 edge in shots and 11-0 advantage in corner kicks for the opening half, came out ready in the second stanza. Charles Romero (Mansfield, MA) gave the home team the one-goal lead in the 61st minute after he put one past RPI netminder Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) off an assist from Christman.
Rensselaer continued to fight back as Tonkel netted his second of the game and third of the season. Junior Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) picked up the assist after he chipped the ball in behind the defense to Tonkel, who shot it into the right corner.
But it was Kelly who would grab the go-ahead tally as he connected on a pass from Vella for the game-winner.
The Ephs saw Peter Morrell (Brunswick, ME) play all 90 minutes; he did not make any saves in the game. Penny shouldered the loss, stopping six shots in the RPI net.
Williams outshot the Engineers, 8-5, for the game, while holding a 16-5 advantage in corners.
