TROY, N.Y. – The Skidmore women's soccer team scored three second-half goals on its way to defeating Rensselaer, 3-0, in the Liberty League finale for both teams, this afternoon at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 10-4-2 overall, including a 4-2-1 mark in conference play. The Engineers drop to 4-9-2 and conclude their league season with a 1-6 record.

After a scoreless first half, junior midfielder Gabi Palacio (Rochester, NY/Allendale Columbia) provided all the offense the Thoroughbreds would need, picking up a rebound right in front of the RPI net and finishing in the 48th minute of play. Sophomore Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) took the initial shot from the right side of the box that was stopped by RPI freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic). The ball popped free to Palacio who knocked in the point-blank opportunity.

The visitors made it 2-0 on a strong individual effort by Yam in the 61st minute. Claiming a loose ball at the edge of the RPI penalty area, she sprinted toward the left side of the net before slotting a low shot inside the far post for her fourth of the season.

Skidmore sophomore Ali Evans (Avon, CT/Westminster) delivered on a sliding finish to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 84th minute. Freshman Sarah LaBella (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa) sent a pass into the RPI box for Evans, who shot into the side netting.

Rensselaer was held to just four shots in the game, as sophomore Kirsten Bombardier (Colchester, VT/Colchester) was the only one to find the target.

Vargas finished with two saves, before she was replaced by classmate Deanna Amoia (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) midway through the second half. Sophomore Melissa Pinsonneault (Hudson, NH/Bishop Guertin) played the final 14 and a half minutes and made one save. Thoroughbreds' junior keeper Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) stopped the only shot she faced to earn the shutout.

The Engineers return to the pitch on Wednesday, when they visit Hartwick for a non-league affair (7pm). Skidmore hosts Nazareth on Saturday (12pm).
