TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer men's basketball team scored a school-record 120 points in defeating Paul Smith's College, 120-77, in the Championship Game of the ECAV Tip-Off Tournament, this afternoon at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-0 on the young season, while the Bobcats fall to 4-6.
Tournament MVP

Joe Gibbons (Lindenhurst, NY/Saint John the Baptist).
Paul Smith's sophomore guard Kashean Alston (Brooklyn, NY) was also named to All-Tournament Team, scoring a team-best 22 points and hauling in a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Engineers went in front early, and held a 21-10 lead midway through the first half. RPI shot a blistering 53.2% (25 for 47) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including an even more impressive 60.0% (9 for 15) from beyond the arc.
With 3:02 to go in the first, sophomore
Daniel Martin (Cohasset, MA/Cohasset) gave the hosts their largest lead of the open stanza (58-27), when classmate
Jamie Zajac (Merrimack, NH/Bishop Guertin) found the forward under the hoop for the easy lay-in. The assist was one of Zajac's career-high eight in the game.
Bull hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Rensselaer a 30-point halftime advantage (69-39).
RPI continued to pull away in the second, thanks to solid offensive performances from all around, as six players finished with double-figures in scoring. Gibbons put the Engineers up 111-70 with two of his career-best 24 points, on a steal that he took coast-to-coast for the dunk with 4:38 to play.
Senior
Travis Jones (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) put up 15 points and five rebounds, while classmate
Andrew Darst (Tampa, FL/Jesuit) added 14 points and four boards. Blakemore had 10 points and five rebounds.
Aiding Alston offensively for the Bobcats, was freshman Patrick Wightman (Prattsburgh, NY), who scored 12 points and grabbed three rebounds in just 16 minutes of work.
The 120 points scored by the Engineers topped the previous record of 117, set by the 1995-96 squad that posted a 117-72 victory over New England College on December 28, 1995.
Rensselaer returns to the court on November 30, when it hosts Williams College at East Campus Arena (7pm). Paul Smith's is also in action on November 30, as it heads to Potsdam to face Clarkson (8pm).
