TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team will honor the nation's servicemen and women on Saturday with its 2nd Annual Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, December 4. The Engineers welcome Union College to the Houston Field House with face-off set for 4pm.
“This is a chance for our program to recognize the men and women who bravely serve our nation overseas and at home,” said head coach John Burke. “The risks and sacrifices they make to ensure our freedom should be honored every day, but today we can give back a little in appreciation for what they do.”
A number of events will take place at the Houston Field House to celebrate Military Appreciation Day, including a visit from Santa and RPI's own Puckman. Prior to the start of the contest, the national anthem will be present by an all-women color guard. Pictures with Santa, which will occur throughout the game, will be available by donation. The proceeds will be divided evenly between the Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC units and placed in the RPI ROTC Joint Service Fund.
Additionally, a Chuck-a-Puck contest will be held at the second intermission, with the winner receiving a coupon for a free large pizza from Papa John's. The RPI ROTC units will also run a concession stand during the game, offering choices such as candy, pizza, hot chocolate and coffee for fans.
Saturday's game will be the 26th all-time meeting between the two schools, who will face off in Schenectady on Friday night (7pm). RPI currently holds the advantage in the series with a 20-2-2 record since the team's first met on February 6, 1996.
Admission to all RPI women's hockey contests is free.
