TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Whitney Naslund recorded three points, including the 100th of her career to lead the Rensselaer women's hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Dartmouth, at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 14-11-6 overall and 11-5-4 in ECAC Hockey, while the Big Green falls to 11-13-2 (8-11-1 ECACH).
With the score tied (1-1), Naslund (Bloomington, MN/Bloomington Jefferson) set up junior
Kendra Dunlop (Granum, AB/Warner Hockey School) for the go-ahead goal at 13:15 of the second period. After digging the puck out of the corner, Naslund found Dunlop all alone in front of the Dartmouth cage for her eighth tally of the season. The assist was the 54th of Naslund's career and 100th career point.
The Engineers took a two-goal lead (3-1) at 8:15 of the third stanza, when Naslund buried the first of her two goals on the afternoon, with assists going to classmates
Allysen Weidner (Wichita, KS/Shattuck St. Mary's) and
Laura Gersten (Queensbury, NY/Troy-Albany Ice Cats).
Dartmouth fought back, pulling to within 3-2 at the 13:08 mark of the third on senior Sarah Parsons' (Dover, MA/U.S. National Team) 18th goal of the season. Taking a feed from fell senior Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat/AB/Kingsland Hawks), Parsons beat RPI junior netminder
Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) for the marker. A second assist went to junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, MN/Benilde-St. Maragaret's School).
Rensselaer was able to capitalize twice in the final minute after the Big Green pulled its goalie, as sophomore
Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) and Naslund put away empty-netters. Harrison put her's home on a tough-angle shot along the right-wing boards, while Naslund's came from just over center ice.
The Big Green opened the scoring at 2:04 of the opening period, when Cunningham intercepted a pass at her own blue line and sent Trunzo in one-on-one with van der Bliek. Trunzo made a move to her right, before sticking in the break-away goal.
RPI freshman
Audrey Stapleton (Barrington Hills, IL/Chicago Young Americans) answered early in the second frame (2:08) after a flurry of chances were turned away. Sophomore
Katie Daniels (Rockton, IL/Chicago Mission) and freshman
Clare Padmore (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) both had shots blocked in close, before Stapleton stuffed home her second of the year.
van der Bliek (13-11-5) made 23 saves without have to make more than nine in any period. Darmouth senior goaltender Mariel Lacina (London, ON/Chatham Jr. Outlaws) (7-13-0) finished with 28 stops, including all 13 shots she faced in the first period.
The Engineers conclude their ECAC Hockey regular season schedule next weekend, when they travel to Cornell and Colgate. Dartmouth visits Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
