SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Freshmen goaltenders Stephanie Vargas (Fogelville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and Deanna Amoia (Tappan, NY/Tappan Zee) combined to stop all three shots they faced as the Rensselaer women's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw with SUNY New Paltz in the Dutchwomen Classic at Union College. With the tie, the Engineers move to 2-1-1, while the are now 1-4-1 on the season.
The first half was played pretty evenly, although RPI outshot SUNY New Paltz six to three. Early in the game RPI forward Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) made a run at the goal, but lost the angle late on the run and drilled a shot right at Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, NY) for a save.
Kristen Bombardier (Colchester, VT/Colchester) had the best opportunity of the half, heading a cross that missed by inches off the post. She immediately collected her own shot and headed it again, this time leaving it wide left.
Later in the half, New Paltz had a golden opportunity of its own, but a diving Vargas caught the shot to her left.
In the second half it was more of the same, with both teams having their chances. In the 34th minute Beth Bowling (Islip, NY) of New Paltz had a shot that went screaming towards Amoia, who jumped and punched the ball just over the net. RPI's Bombardier had another chance from a distance but the ball nicked the crossbar and fell out.
RPI's Giana Abballe (Old Tappen, NY/Northern Valley Regional) had the best look at the net in the first overtime, beating her defender to the right and crushing a ball towards the goal that ricocheted off the post.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Middlebury at ECAV Stadium (7:15pm).
