ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta State men's soccer team struck first in the opening half and found the net in the second half enroute to a 2-1 win over Rensselaer in non-conference action on Tuesday. With the victory, the Red Dragons improve to 3-1-2 on the season, while the Engineers are now 3-2-0 overall.
Sophomore Eric Fortier got the home team on the board in the 24th mintue after he connected on a crossing pass from Dan Scott on the right flank and re-directed it in past RPI netminder Alex Penny. Oneonta State held the visiting Engineers to just three shots in the first half, owning a 5-3 advantage.
The second half of action saw the Red Dragons sneak another shot past Penny as senior Michael Diefenbacher headed in a pass from across the field by Tim Sagasti to make it a 2-0 game in the 72nd minute.
Rensselaer refused to give up late in the game, pressuring the home team with a 7-4 favor in shots. In the 87th minute, the Engineers closed the gap as sophomore Jimmy Mulhern dribbled the ball up the middle and got the ball past Red Dragons keeper Maxwell Siegelman.
In goal, Siegelman picked up the victory, posting three saves. He came on in relief of starter, Jesse Dobson, who stopped two shots in the opening 45 minutes. For RPI, Penny recorded four stops in the loss.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Ithaca College. Game time against the Bombers is set for 3pm. Oneonta State is also in action on Saturday, opening SUNYAC play on the road at New Paltz (1pm).
