TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nora Tomlinson-Weintraub broke open a scoreless game in the 74th minute and 11th-ranked Middlebury College held on for a 1-0 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in non-conference women's soccer action at East Campus Stadium. The Panthers pick up their first win of the season and are now 1-1-1 overall, while the Engineers move to 2-2-1 on the season.

Senior Drew Smith (Silver Spring, MD/Maret) started the play for Middlebury as she carried the ball down to the left and chipped in a shot from 35-yards out to the far side. Tomlinson-Weintraub (Burlingame, CA/Crystal Springs) broke through a pair of RPI defenders and sent the pass into the left corner.

RPI continued to pressure following the goal, sending a number of shots in on Panthers netminder Elizabeth Foody (Ottawa, ON/Ashbury). The Engineers best opportunity came in the 87th minute as rookie Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) saw her quick shot go just wide on the equalizer attempt, unable to steer it inside the left post.

Sophomore Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) followed seconds later with a shot right at Foody, who was able to make the catch against her chest to preserve the one-goal lead for the visitors.

As time ticked off the clock, RPI attempted to clear the ball into the Middlebury zone, but the Panthers held strong enroute to the win.

It was a defensive battle to open the contest as the Panthers came out firing. The visitors held an 11-3 advantage in shots as freshman goalie Stephanie Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) made five stops.

RPI was able to get the ball on net in each of their three shots, including a header attempt by sophomore Kirsten Bombardier (Colchester, VT/Colchester), but Middlebury starter Jocelyn Remmert (Pelham, NY/Hackley School) was up to the task. She stopped two shots, while the Panthers' defense picked up the other.

Foody picked up the victory with four saves for Middlebury, which held just a 13-12 advantage in shots for the game. RPI, which picked up nine of their shots in the second half to the Panthers' two, saw Vargas conclude the game with five saves.

The Engineers are back on the pitch on Saturday, traveling to Utica for a 5pm match against the Pioneers. Middlebury is also in action on Saturday when it NESCAC-rival Trinity at 2:30pm.
