TROY, N.Y. – Senior goaltender Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) made nine saves, including back-to-back stops in the second overtime to help the Rensselaer men's soccer team to a scoreless draw with St. Lawrence, at Renwyck Field. With the tie, the Engineers move to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Liberty League. The Saints are now 5-2-1 (1-0-1 Liberty).

A Saints counter attack in the 107th minute turned into the visitor's best opportunity to score, but two highlight reel saves from Penny kept them off the scoresheet. St. Lawrence sophomore midfielder Sam DeMello (Easthampton, MA/Williston Northampton) ripped a shot that was headed for the top left corner of the net, only to be turned away by a sprawling Penny. DeMello then headed a ball towards the far post, but Penny was there as well, reaching up with his left hand to make the save.

St. Lawrence came up with one final chance on a corner kick in the waning seconds of the overtime two, but the shot that eventually found the back of the net was ruled to have come after the final horn had sounded.

Penny (4-2-2) finished with nine saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season. Saints' sophomore goalie Nate Goss-Woliner (Waitsfield, VT/Kimball Union) picked up his second shutout after making four stops.

In the eighth minute of play, the Engineers created a chance at the top of the Saints' 18, when junior Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenenedehowa) slid a pass to sophomore Adam Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson), but his left-footed attempt was saved by a diving Goss-Woliner (3-1-1).

RPI put together another chance in the 57th minute as Tambasco took a ball played up the right flank and drilled a low shot that Goss-Woliner just got a piece of, sending it out for a corner.

The Engineers held a 10-8 regulation time edge in shots, as well as a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. St. Lawrence went on to out-shoot RPI 4-1 in overtime, including 3-1 in the final frame.

Saints senior midfielder Emmanuel Mbong (Norman, OK/Norman) finished with a game-high three shots on goal, while DeMello and junior Dan Marvin (Bow, NH/Holderness) put two on target. Four different Engineers notched multiple shot attempts, including Tambasco, who had a team-high three.

Rensselaer is back in action on October 8 and 9, when it hosts Liberty League foes Hamilton (4pm) and Hobart (2pm), respectively. The Saints visit Potsdam State on Tuesday (7pm).
