TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Linda Larsen hit three free throws in the final 1:29, to break a 44-44 tie and give the home-standing Rensselaer women's basketball team a 47-44 victory over Hamilton, at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in Liberty League play. The Continentals fall to 5-6 (0-4 Liberty League).
Fouled on a three-point attempt, Larsen (Kobehavn V., Denmark/Himmelev) connected on 2 of 3 from the line to give RPI a 46-44 advantage with 1:29 left in regulation. The Engineers then held Hamilton to 0 for 5 shooting down the stretch, while Larsen added another free throw, to secure the win.
Rensselaer scored the first eight points of the game and held a 17-6 lead, midway through the first half (10:01). The Continentals fought back, however, scoring 17 of the next 22 points to take a one-point (23-22) lead with 1:49 remaining in the first half. Eliza Howe (Westport, CT/Staples) led the way, netting eight of her game-high 15 points over that stretch.
Senior
Allison Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson) drilled a three-pointer and junior
Laura Easterling (Ventura, CA/Ventura) converted a lay-up as RPI ended the half a run on a 5-0 run, taking a 27-23 lead at the break.
The hosts opened the second half by scoring six of the first eight points to push their lead to 33-25, just 2:30 in the frame. The eight-point Engineers' advantage was largest either team would hold the rest of the way.
Junior
Nicole Monroe (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) gave Rensselaer a 44-41 lead with 4:34 to play, but Blue Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Long Island Lutheran) answered at the other end with a three-pointer to even things at 44-all.
Larsen and Monroe recorded nine points apiece, while Connor and junior
Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) each had seven. Howe was aided offensively by Sanders, who finished with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they host William Smith at East Campus Arena (2pm). Hamilton travels to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar (2pm).
