Wetmore’s leads the way with a game-high 23 points

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior Sarah Wetmore led a trio of double-digit scorers with a game-high 23 points as the Rensselaer women's basketball team defeated Skidmore, 74-59, in Liberty League action. With the win, the Engineers improve to 8-10 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while Skidmore drops to 8-9 (4-3 Liberty League).

RPI broke open what a tightly contested game in the with a little over four minutes to play. Leading, 62-56, senior Allison Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson) and junior Hillary McKinley (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Memorial) joined Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) in the Engineers offensive attack, as the three combined to score all of the team's points on a 9-0, pushing the lead to 13 points (69-56) with just 1:42 left.

A free-throw from Connor, followed by two more by Wetmore sealed the victory for the Engineers. Wetmore, who finished with 23 points on 7 of 12 shooting, was also 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. She grabbed six rebounds, four assists and a steal.

McKinley came off the bench to score 18 points, while nabbing seven rebounds. She also recorded game-highs in blocked shots (2) and steals (4). Connor was the third Rensselaer player to finish in double-figures, netting 15 points on 5 of 12 shooting, including 4 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Skidmore was led offensively by freshman Michela Ottati (Fort Johnson, NY/Averill Park), who had 18 points and five rebounds, while scoring all of her points on threes (6 of 10). Junior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Technical) chipped in with 15 points and classmate Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) had 13.

The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they visit North Country-rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence on Friday (6pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively.
