TROY, N.Y. – Junior Shannon Maguire headed home a service from classmate Kirsten Bombardier midway through overtime to send the Rensselaer women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Clarkson, in Liberty League action at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Golden Knights drop to 7-4 and 1-4 in the conference.

In the 97th minute, Bombardier (Colchester, VT/Colchester) took an Engineers' free-kick from just inside of midfield that Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) was able to redirect into the top right corner of the net. The goal, which ended the match, was Maguire's second of the season and the game-winning assist was the first of Bombardier's career.

A first half that was slowed by heavy rain and strong winds, saw each team come away with one shot attempt. Rensselaer sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) stopped the only she faced in the opening stanza.

The pace picked up a bit in the second half leading to a handful of chances each way. Clarkson's most dangerous opportunity came in the 63rd minute, when junior Linde Zajac (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) lofted a shot from the edge of the penalty area that Vargas had to punch off the goal line.

RPI freshman Emily Eastman (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) redirected a corner kick by junior captain Nikki Goodsell (Danbury, CT/Danbury) on-goal, but Golden Knights' freshman goalie Brianna Thibeau (Salem, NY/Salem) was there to make the save.

Goodsell then had a chance in the waning seconds of regulation, but her shot from the right side of the box was blocked away as the horn sounded. Vargas (4-3) finished with five saves to earn her first shutout of the season, while Thibeau (6-4) made one stop at the other end of the pitch.

RPI is back action tomorrow afternoon, when it hosts St. Lawrence at East Campus Stadium (2pm). Clarkson visits 16th-ranked Union tomorrow (2pm).
