TROY, N.Y. – Despite holding a 22-9 advantage in shots, the Rensselaer women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with St. Lawrence, in Liberty League action at East Campus Stadium. With the tie the Engineers are now 5-6-2 overall (2-2-1 Liberty), while the Saints move to 6-3-3 (3-1-2 Liberty).
Rensselaer came up with the first scoring chance of the game in the 33rd minute, when junior
Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) slipped a ball behind the Saints' back line for sophomore
Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). Rothschild took a touch into the left side of the box before hammering a shot off the near post.
Four minutes later St. Lawrence freshman Mackenzie Collins (East Longmeadow, MA/Northfield-Mount Hermon) took a shot that was blocked away by the Engineers defense and out of danger. RPI then had a handful of chances from distance that were held by Saints' senior keeper Abby van Geldern (Rowayton, CT/Brien McMahon).
St. Lawrence came away with its best scoring chance in the 65th minute, as a free-kick from the left side by senior Elena Rogers (Naugatuck, CT/Stratton Mountain School) was pushed the edge of the six-yard box by RPI sophomore goalie Stephanie Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic). Sophomore midfielder Julia Friesen (Niagara on the Lake, ON/Niagara District Secondary) picked up the rebound and shot wide, off the side the net.
A scoreless second half sent the game to overtime, where a defensive save by St. Lawrence centerback Corinne Werner (Simsbury, CT/Westminster School), kept zeros on the scoreboard. Rensselaer sophomore striker
Giana Abballe (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) played Rothschild past van Geldern to the edge of the St. Lawrence six, but Rothschild effort was cleared away by Werner in the 93rd minute.
The Saints had just one shot attempt in overtime, a drive by Mackenzie that sailed high and wide of the target. Engineers' freshman midfielder
Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton) then stepped into a shot from 25 yards out in the 105th minute, but it was hit right into the arms of van Geldern.
Vargas (4-3-1) earned her second shutout in as many games, posting one save, while van Geldern (5-2-3) was forced to come up with eight saves at the other end.
RPI is back on the pitch on Wednesday, when they visit area-rival Union College (7pm). The Saints travel to Oswego for a non-league contest on Tuesday (3pm).
