TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Nikki Goodsell assisted on the game-tying goal and scored the game-winner to lead the Rensselaer women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Bard College, in Liberty League play at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 7-6-2 overall (4-2-1 Liberty), while the Raptors drop to 3-12-0 (0-7-0 Liberty).
Trailing by a goal (1-0) at halftime, Rensselaer fought back early in the second, tying the game on a header by junior
Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) in the 48th minute. Goodsell (Danbury, CT/Danbury) whipped in a corner from the right that found Maguire, who finished point-blank at the back post. The goal was Maguire's fourth of the year and third in the last four games.
The Engineers then had pair of quality scoring chances, including a glancing header by sophomore striker
Sara Rothschild (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) that was pushed just wide of the right upright. Goodsell also had a well-timed volley that was blocked away by the Bard defense.
RPI eventually pulled ahead (2-1) on goal by Goodsell in the 55th minute. Rothschild served a ball into the box from the right wing that Goodsell ran onto and buried – one-time – in the side netting. The tally was her second goal of the season.
Freshman
Sandy Kirk (Houston, TX/Clear Lake) delivered an insurance goal (3-1) in the 65th minute off of one of the Engineers 14 corner kicks. Classmate
Taylor Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton) brought the ball down just outside the six, before knocking it towards goal. Kirk redirected it in for her first collegiate marker.
The visitors scored in the 25th minute, when freshman Joanna Regan (Selden, NY/Newfield) lofted a shot from the top of box over RPI sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vargas (Fogelsville, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), who was charging off of her line. Bard sophomore Maddy Huggins (Mukilteo, WA/Archbishop Murphy) earned the assist after sending the ball from the left flank.
Vargas (6-3-1) earned the win without a save, while Bard starting keeper Jenn Osher (Stamford, CT/Westhill) made seven saves in the first 71 minutes before being relieved by junior Lena James (Atlanta, GA/Henry W. Grady), who finished with one stop.
RPI returns to action on Wednesday, when they host Skidmore at East Campus Stadium (7:30pm). Bard hosts Utica on Wednesday (7pm).
