Bailei Tetrault each reached double digits and Rensseler used a 18-1 run to start the second half en route to a 66-46 victory over Eastern Nazarene in the opening round of the Bowdoin Tip-Off Tournament presented by the Inn at Brunswick Station on Friday evening.
The win is the first on the season for the Engineers (1-1), who advance to play the host Polar Bears in the championship tilt Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The Lions drop to 1-1 on the season and will face Plymouth State in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m.
Bailei Tetrault led a balanced RPI attack with 11 points while
Sarah Wetmore added 10 in the win.
Jen Rock had eight points and seven boards for the Engineers. Eastern Nazarene was paced by 10 points from Alexis Malloy and received 13 boards from Shardae Brown in the loss.
A tightly-played first half saw RPI use a late surge to carry a 32-30 edge into intermission. The Engineers exploded out of the gate in the second period, taking advantage of several Lions turnovers to quickly pushing the lead to double digits. Wetmore nailed three-pointer made it
43-31 as RPI's lead eventually grew to 19 points after
Jen Rock hit a pair of free throws to cap the 18-1 run. Eastern Nazarene could get no closer than 16 points for the remainder of the game.
RPI shot 47.2% from the field for the game and held the Lions to 26.3%, including just 12.0% in the second half. Eastern Nazarene held a 42-37 edge on the glass, but committed 38 turnovers and hit just 2 of 13 shots from three-point range.
