STORRS, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts Lowell had four players tally multiple points, including a two-goal effort from Joseph Pendenza, and the 17th-ranked River Hawks defeated the Rensselaer men's hockey team, 7-2 in the first game of the Toyota UConn Hockey Classic.
RPI got its goals from freshmen forwards
Ryan Haggerty and
Zach Schroeder, while junior CJ Lee assisted on both markers.
Scott Diebold made 17 saves for the Engineers, which held a 25-24 advantage in shots.
UMass Lowell scored three goals in the first period, including the game's first by Pendenza just 43 seconds into the game, before Rensselaer got on the board. Haggerty, who missed the previous three games while ill, picked up his fourth of the year on the power play at 4:35 of the second period. Lee and
Brock Higgs were credited with the assists.
The River Hawks came right back, however, as Scott Wilson scored just 30 seconds after Haggerty to regain the three-goal edge. UMass Lowell then scored the next two goals, one more in the second and one early in the third, for a 6-1 lead.
Schroeder's second of the season pulled RPI closer at the 16:46 mark but Pendenza's second of the game and sixth of the year on the power play at 19:50 closed out the game.
Rensselaer faces Army, which dropped a 2-0 decision to the host Huskies, in the third place game on Friday at 4pm. The River Hawks, who got 23 saves from Doug Carr, face UConn at 7:15pm.
