Women's Hoops Falls to Skidmore, 73-62

Gaugler nets game-high 22 in Thoroughbreds’ come-back win

Troy, N.Y. – Junior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) scored a game-best 22 points to go along with five rebounds to lead the Skidmore women's basketball team to a 73-62 victory over Rensselaer, at East Campus Arena. With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 11-10 and 7-4 in the Liberty League, while the Engineers fall to 9-12 (5-5 Liberty League).

After trailing by eight points (31-23) at the half, Gaugler led the visitors to a 50-point second half en route to the win. Skidmore scored the first 10 points of the second, including a three-pointer by Gaugler with 16:53 to play to put the Thoroughbreds up 33-31.

Rensselaer fought back to take a pair of one-point leads in the second stanza, including one with 14:06 left on a three-point shot by senior Linda Larsen (Kobenhavn. V., Denark/Himmelev).

The visitors quickly regained the lead and built a six-point edge (47-41) with 10:21 remaining in the second frame. The Engineers drew to within two points (53-51) after junior Sarah Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Subury Regional) hit 1 of 2 from the free throw line.

Larsen kept the game close (57-56) with a jump-shot at the 4:42 mark, but Skidmore answered with a decisive 12-2 run and a built a game-high 11-point lead (69-58) with 57 seconds to go. A pair of free-throws from Thoroughbreds junior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Technical) sealed the win.

Four Skidmore players finished in double-figures, including Gargiso, who had 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) added 12 points, two assists and two steals.

Leading the way for the Engineers was Larsen, who finished with a team-high 15 points. Wetmore delivered a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Allison Connor (Hudson, NY/Hudson) chipped in with 12 points on 4 of 9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Union (2pm). Skidmore heads to Poughkeepsie to take on Vassar (2pm).
