Swimming & Diving Splits Against Hamilton

TROY, N.Y. – Three divers recorded NCAA Cuts in their events, while a number of other student-athletes had standout performances as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving team split against Hamilton College in their season home finales on Saturday. RPI's men claimed a 131-110 victory, while the Engineers women fell, 132-99.

Pacing the men's team was rookie diver Miguel Hummel (Pittsburgh, PA/Fordham Prep.), who posted a NCAA Cuts off both boards for the second straight week. He won off the 3-meter board with a career-high score of 319.10 points and then claimed victory in the 1-meter event with a score of 292.05 points.

Sophomore Adam Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson) also had an outstanding effort, recording an NCAA Cut off the 3-meter board with a score of 295.80. He also finished third in the 1-meter with a score of 257.40 points. 

In the swimming events, sophomore David James (Bakersfield, CA/Liberty) won the 1000-freestyle with a mark of 10:10.63 and also picked up a win in the 500-free in a time of 4:57.45. Senior Alex Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson) also had a solid effort, winning the 200-backstroke in a time of 2:01.52, while helping the 400-medley relay team to a win with a time of 3:37.59.

Other members of the relay team included senior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), sophomore Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) and junior Luke Flanagan (Old Bethpage, NY/Plainview-Old Bethpage-JFK).

On the women's side, junior captain Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) posted a pair of wins. She won the 50-free in a time of 26.05 and was victorious in the 200-breaststroke with a mark of 2:31.44. 

The Engineers 400-free relay team won in a time of 4:02.20, while senior captain Grace Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH/Manchester) won the 3-meter event with an NCAA Cut of 273.00 points. She remains undefeated in the event, having claimed nine straight wins this season.

Both squads are now idle for the next two weeks, but return to action on February 23 when they travel to Webster, NY to compete in the 2011 UNYSCSA Championships. Action at the meet, which runs through February 26, begins at 10am each day with timed trials. Finals will commence at 6:30pm each night.
