TROY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly men's awards and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete
Brock Higgs has been named the MLX Skates Rookie of the Week after helping the eighth-ranked Engineers to a 1-0-1 week, including a win over 19th-ranked Princeton on Saturday afternoon.
A freshman from Kingston, Ont., Higgs picked up a goal and an assist in Rensselaer's two games last week, which included a tie at Quinnipiac (3-3) and a win at Princeton (5-2). He scored against the Bobcats on three shots with a +1 rating, before assisting on the eventual game-winning tally against the Tigers.
Higgs is fourth on the Engineers in scoring, with six goals and 12 assists for 18 points in just 23 games. He has also recorded two power play tallies and is second on the club with three game-winning goals. The centerman has only been assessed nine penalties for a total of 18 minutes.
A former member of the Kingston Voyageurs, Higgs is 20th nationally in points per game by a rookie (0.78). He is fifth in ECAC Hockey in game-winning goals and 21st in power play points with nine (2 goals, 7 assists). Sixth amongst league rookies in power play points, he is seventh in overall freshman scoring.
Playing in 12 of RPI's 16 ECAC Hockey contests, Higgs has amassed 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists), including a power play and game-winning tally. He has four penalties for eight minutes in league play.
Rensselaer (18-6-4; 10-5-1 ECAC Hockey) returns to the Houston Field House this weekend, when it hosts Colgate and Cornell on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (3:30pm), respectively.
