Matt Koziol scored his first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute and the Rensselaer men's soccer team held on for a 1-0 victory over Cazenovia College, this afternoon in day two action from the Union Classic. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-0 on the young season, while Cazenovia drops to 0-2.
Koziol (Poughkeepsie, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) broke a scoreless draw when he picked up rebound off a shot by senior
Julian Coy (Bristow, VA/Brentsville District) and finished past the outstretched arms of Cazenovia goalkeeper Riley Battaglini (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and into the net.
The Engineers went on to outshoot the Wildcats 24-7, including a 14-4 edge in the opening 45 minutes. RPI also earned five corner kicks to Cazenovia's one.
Sophomore goalie
Craig Bennett (Oakdale, NY/Connetquot) was forced to make just four saves, but three of them were key stops in the second half. He earned his second shutout in just his second collegiate start.
Senior
Andrew Tambasco (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) recorded a game-high four shots, while Coy, Koziol, junior
William Keddy-Hector (Driftwood, TX/Wimberley) and junior
Sean Southall (Streetly, England/QMCS) each had three.
Rensselaer returns to action next Friday and Saturday, when it takes part in the Mayor's Cup Tournament in Oneonta, N.Y. The Engineers take on Babson (1pm) and Ithaca (1pm), respectively.
