BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshman midfielder
Taylor Korytko notched her first collegiate goal, but the Rensselaer women's soccer team fell to ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 5-1, this afternoon in the first game of the Johns Hopkins Invitational. With the win, the Blue Jays open their 2011 season at 1-0, while the Engineers drop to 0-2.

Nikki Goodsell (Danbury, CT/Danbury) centered the ball to Korytko (Tampa, FL/Hamilton), who settled the pass and then lofted a shot from about 15 yards out into the upper left corner.
Freshman Sydney Teng got off her career off to a good start when she scored off just 13 seconds in, setting a school and Centennial Conference record. Sophomore Pamela Vranis got the play going when she spring senior Erica Suter with a nice ball over the defense. Suter dribbled down the right line and then crossed the ball to Teng, who chipped the ball over the outstretched hands of
Marisa Sciolino. With the assist, Suter became the program's all-time assist leader, breaking a tie with six other players.
Hopkins then got a pair of goals in just 17 seconds to push out to a 3-0 lead with just under 12 minutes gone in the game. Freshman Hannah Kronick flicked the ball to Suter, who settled the ball and then tucked a shot inside the left post at 11:28. It was Kronick who was on the receiving end seconds later on some nice passing by the Blue Jays. Senior Pam Kopfensteiner played a ball into the box from the right touchline that senior Paulina Goodman redirected to Kronick. From in tight, she played a low shot to the far post for her first career goal.
In the 40th minute, it was Goodman's turn as junior Dana Stone played a long ball over the defense to Goodman, who deftly chipped it over a charging Sciolino to send Hopkins into the half with a 4-0 lead. Kronick added to her point total on the afternoon in the 50th minute, notching her second goal of the afternoon. Suter collected a long ball, avoided Engineers' back-up goalie
Deanna Amoia near the end line and sent a perfectly placed ball across the mouth of the goal to a wide-open Kronick, who put it home.
Redsun got the win in the goal for Hopkins, making a pair of saves in just over 67 minutes of action. Sciolino took the loss and made two saves, while Amoia also had two.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 3 to wrap up the JHU Invitational against Carnegie Mellon. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 pm at Homewood Field. RPI will face Eastern at Noon on Sunday.
