TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team held Union College to just 23% shooting and the Engineers put three players in double figures in scoring in defeating the Dutchwomen, 49-39, in a Liberty League contest at the East Campus Arena.

RPI allowed just 15 baskets on 65 Union shots with six blocks in improving to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in the league. The Dutchwomen, who held the Engineers to 34% shooting (20 for 59), fall to 5-7 and 1-3.

The Engineers held a 24-16 lead at the half, thanks in part to a 12-2 run just after the midway point. Seniors Sarah Wetmore (9) and Hillary McKinley (6) – both of whom missed the last two games – combined for 15 of RPI's 24 first half points. Senior Mary Donohue paced Union with six points in the opening 20 minutes.

Both teams played aggressively on the defensive end in the opening half with Rensselaer holding the Dutchwomen to 23% shooting from the floor (8 for 35), while the Engineers managed to shoot just 28% (10 for 36).

RPI held its lead throughout the second half, though Union cut it to seven points (36-29) around the halfway mark. Wetmore immediately answered with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to build the advantage up to 12 points (41-29) and the Engineers defense held the Dutchwomen without a field goal for 6:40 during that stretch.

McKinley (Quinebaug, CT/Tourtellotte Memorial) finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double in 10 games this season. She also had five blocked shots. Wetmore (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln Sudbury Regional) also had a game-high 14 points, while sophomore Kelly Piotrowski (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) added 11.

For Union, senior Rachel Beaulac (Troy, NY/Troy) had five points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Brittney Kenney (Branford, CT/Branford) scored a team-high eight points. Donohue (Niverville, NY/Ichabod Crane) finished with six points.

Rensselaer hosts Skidmore College on Saturday at 2pm, while the Dutchwomen host Bard at 2pm on Saturday. Both games are Liberty League contests.
